Supplying a kit with a programmable variant would be a symbolic act at best, it would change nothing about the real PS3.

I meant from the perspective of the open source developers.

Sure it is a relatively cheap devkit for people looking to find a road into console development for real ... but even if it uses the same scheme again Sony will still be making lots of money using open source software on a platform on which you cant actually do any open source development.

The emergence of embedded devices running Linux and other open source software which cannot be easily reverse engineered to allow you to play with the internals is relatively new ... and I dont think in the end it will be something very well received.
