ICO, good game, bad game? Want opinions!

Yeah, with all this talk about the HDR/DX9 lighting in Half Life 2, I really have to give Ico its due props. It may be 'faking' it, but IMO it looks just as good.

I believe ICO was the first game to use that kind of effect, wasn't it?

Nay, Nico just needs to run 480p since Ico is at some half output resolutio or something. Hey, this my thoughts, dont be killing me. Ico was a simple, slow and short game. Need to sprice things up IMHO.

and again, u want an action game? go get freaking ZOE or some game like that. ICO with loads of action would not be ICO.

Hey, LB.

You should have known that not everyone can appreciate the beauty and emotion of ICO. Those people can only enjoy FPS with loads of weapons to choose from with super shiny shine on everything even that thing shouldn't have shiny shine.

For real-time-ray-tracing:

Objects to create some shadows: box, rock couch, rock door.

I know, low-poly ... but best frame-rate ever :D

More stuff like wallpapers and screensavers, enjoyjoy ...

I hope not IMO that was never the pull of ICO, what action there was was always used to punctuate the periods of calm as you explore.

just as do not expect cyberdemons to burst in while I'm playing tetris I don't expect 28hit combos to start flashing up in nico (hell if they put a health bar in there it'll 'reall'y wig me out).

still I suppose they could include an 'extreme' mode to satisfy that market segment.

I'd argue that it's contextual since different ppeps enjoy different types of games.

I don't think Ico was faking anything... It was just doing the same effect in software. I was surprised that HL2 was touted for that particualr thing, seeing how it was already done not only in Ico, but in Splinter Cell also.

Speaking of half resolution and ICO, for some reason the Samsung LCD HDTV I tested before settling on this one absolutely would NOT display ICO. This one does just fine. Strange...

-Part hand-made alpha texturing ,part frame buffer trick +an "Artistic " animated tiled noise filtering..:) 8)

I just remembered, ZOE2 also has that same HDR lighting effect.

How did you came into possesion of such knowledge? I don't remember Ico developers giving out any technical info about the game.

I think Killzone will feature it too ...

For those who don't know what HDR means:

High Dynamic Range rendering technique

The glare effect, which is popular HDR expression,
is used for the very bright place like a skylight.

More examples are available here.
Developer Interview HL2 "SIGGRAPH2003" / SAN DIEGO, Calif. on July 27, 2003.

The interviewed Valve guy liked ICO too :D

Interesting, HDR in HL2 was done on the programmable pixel shader of certain graphic cards, so it is as "fake" as on PS2, because the effect is done in software too ;)

how is HDR implemented in offline rendering then (aside from higher precisions used)?

HDR or whatever, the bright glare effects were many a plenty in games i seen before. HL2 certainly aint the first. Maybe Valve be doing some *special* glare?

plenty? u mean splinter Cell? it pretty cause it's more accurrate. previous glares had a strange (and distractiing) light distribution), or used light maps (poorly) to conver the same effect.

it's pretty useful especially for redering outdoors/desert type enviroment. gives that summer in the sun look.

Cant recall specifically what and what games ATM, but yeah, SC had that. And GT3 too? Bright glarerry surfaces certainly aint new to me, but the shiney shine!!! now thats interesting!

SC definately, GT3 had hacks like ICO (not as convincing tho, dusk shots are obviouse hacks) in short I think it suppliments current perpixel lighting techniques nicely.

shiney shine (we really are adopting this terms right?) has been around for yonks considering it's an even bigger hack for lighting approximation. I'd really rather not see overuse thanks.
