ICO, good game, bad game? Want opinions!

Devourer... I'm downloading as we speak (33.2MB version) - is this the new one with the spoilers Marc posted taken out? If so, I won't watch it, as I haven't played the game yet.

Unfortunately, the game is not available in Switzerland anymore. I will have to look into ordering it from overseas I guess.... ;)

You can get the PAL version from ebay or http://www.cd-wow.com (free worldwide shipping).

ICO is a masterpiece that you shouldn't miss.

More ICO love :)

NICO (ICO2) News:
http://gameonline.jp/news/2003/09/08003.html
I am not totally sure, but I think the "sequel" will be released February 2004.

Such a good game! Unique, artistically appealing and impressive, "minimalist" in control scheme and instructions/background. I kept getting "shades of Myst" from Ico... and that's a GOOD thing! Mainly, it's great to see games that are ENTIRELY on their own still coming out.

Ico, IMO is much more than Myst. Although they share the resemblance in atmosphere, Myst is completely lacking any kind of emotion and human touch that Ico bursts with. It's a much dryer, colder game, IMO.

As for Nico, I'm looking forward to any kind of (un)official announcement. I doubt it will be a full-fledged sequel involving the characters or story from Ico, though.

That's why I said "shades of." :) You can draw many parallels, but it's not a straight comparison. Ico differentiates itself from Myst very much (which I would expect after games evolving so many years), but I got a similar effect from them after picking them up and starting to play them--especially on the backdrops of the "normal games" we've come to expect.

To me, ICO is an all-time great. It was an absolute joy to play for a number of reasons:

  • : The ease of play and simple controls. Walk, run, climb without millions of buttons.
: The gentle pace, refusing to move into twitch-game territory. Only the occasional attack by the shadow creatures adding just the right amount of tension.
: The characterisation - you're a child and you stay a child. No turning into some kind of gun-toting ninja super-hero half-way through.
: The emotional attachment to Yorda. In most games I dread seeing missions or levels where I have to guard or protect an NPC. In ICO I actually cared about her. I forgave her the occasional strange movement and just made sure I looked after her properly.
: The lovely environment. Again, no attempt to follow the cliche and have a fire-level, an ice-level, a space-level... Just a fantasy castle with just enough variation to be interesting without being inconsistent. And add to that a stunning sense of scale and proportion, and an inspired use of lighting effects. Beautiful.
: The audio was marvelously restrained, creating just the right ambience.
For me, it's the defining game of this generation. Many games got my attention, but this is the one I'd most like to have my name in the credits for.

To not like ICO is to not like games. In fact, if you don't like ICO you have no soul...

What, you didn't unlock that mode? Man, you missed out on some GREAT Deathmatch! :p ;)

I see there's a lot of gamers with very good taste here :D

I feel that ICO is the best game released this generation, easily. Better than Zelda, better than Panzer Dragoon Orta, better than Metal Gear Solid 2, better than any game in years or maybe ever. It's a simple, magical experience, and one of the few video games that manages to transcend the medium.

seconded, thing is this will likely jinx the formula for the sequel/spinoff

from this gen this and Rez were definate highlights.

Hey, I think I'll let Warren Spector weigh in here, too! (From a recent interview on IGN:)

IGN: Going to the game, you've mentioned that Deus Ex is a melding of genres; there's role playing, action and stealth. Do you feel that the future of games is the continuation of this fusion of genres, or do you think that there's room for entirely new genres?

WS: I think there's always room for more innovation and new things. On the small scale, Ico, I think, actually delivered a small new thing: holding a character's hand and really feeling like your job is to rescue this person, and establishing a personal connection. That was new. That was genuinely new. No one had ever done it. So on a scale, there's that kind of new thing.

And as we all know, Warren Spector knows everything.

(Funky, he had another comment later in the interview:

The best game I played a couple of years ago was Ico. Ico is one of my 10 favorite games of all time. And it's completely linear, totally puzzle-driven, absolutely scripted in every conceivable way, and absolutely fantastic. So there's room for everything. I don't particularly make games like that, but I'll play them when they're that good )

In a way I almost hope that the ICO sequel or whatever never comes. That way I won't be disappointed when it doesn't measure up.

They set the bar so high that I can't imagine that they'll surpass it :(

just got back from a replay through this, allow me to reiterate 'Wow'.

They set the bar so high that I can't imagine that they'll surpass it

I am hoping for an 'empire strikes back' and not Godfather part 2 personnelly.

Yeah, with all this talk about the HDR/DX9 lighting in Half Life 2, I really have to give Ico its due props. It may be 'faking' it, but IMO it looks just as good.

Well, it isn't less fake since it is done in hardware in hl2. ;)
