I might be starting a medical degree at the start of 2012!!!

I have none at the moment. In New Zealand you don't need an undergraduate degree to start medicine. :) All I have is good high school grades...

Oh I thought you were older and deviating from your original university degree (as I'm doing right now).

Best wishes then ;)
AFAIK, medicine isn't as bad as you're describing it. If it's anything like an European Bologne-certified medicine course, you start getting paid by the 5th year, while you're still taking the course, which is really nice.

Actually I start getting paid in the 4th year IIRC and I get 10k a year if I choose to work in an understaffed area of the country after graduation to apply against my student loan.

Thanks for your best wishes... :)

P.S I just ordered Grays Anatomy, I guess its on!

E.R. is the best hospital TV show ever. I guess House M.D. is good too even though I've never seen it, because Hugh Laurie is just awesome. (However, E.R. had Paul McCrane... Can't top him. :D)

The reference book or the DVD? ;)

Edit: And I hope Grall is joking.

Don t worry about med school. It s not that hard intellectually... it s a marathon. I mean there is no intellectual challenge. It s purely a will power battle against yourself.

I kind of anticipate that. Is there anything I can do to mentally toughen myself up?

My advice would be healthy lifestyle. It prevents burnout.
Some people would advise to work with a group but i found it distracting and inefficient.
But long term strategy is necessary. A vast majority of students just cram through basic science and just learn everything by heart. This is highly ineffective.
Basic science, physiology and anatomy are the brick and mortar of medical knowledge. If you master the bases, you will later notice that everything comes beautifully together.
I came from a math/physics school and while my fellow students were frenetically darkening pages during courses, i found that i could afford not taking notes to concentrate on understanding systems. Try not to write what the teacher says but what you understand. You ll find watever he said at home un your books anyways.
Remembering by reasoning is essential.

Ahh, thanks. I'll take that to heart. Im currently working my way through anatomy and medical terminology.

So how are your studies going? I was pre-med major for awhile...it was fun while it lasted given that many of the classes had good looking girls in them. You can't get that majoring in engineering or computer science...:p
