How many times does the WinXP progress bar scroll before entering log in screen?

last time I tried hibernation, my comp was faster at booting up/shutdown than dumping or reading the 2GB file.
It sure beats what I'm doing lately (reloading dozens firefox tabs I haven't read yet)

An alternative is S3 stand by, same as sleep on Vista. you enable it with a BIOS option. Same as hibernation, but it's instant. Computer is entirely shutdown except the memory still gets refreshed. Excellent unless you have quirks (I will check it again, I believe I now have stand by "quirks", whereas it was perfect with my older mobo)
 
Zero times, not showing the bootlogo and saving a few seconds because of that.

I use another trick.
I use classic logon, with TweakUI's autologon options. In addition, I use a setting in gpedit.msc : admin templates/system/"Remove Boot / shutdown / logon / logoff status messages".

Those messages are useless, it feels less busy without them ;)
