Horizon Forbidden West [PS, PC]

I'm in the process of mopping up all the side quests, locations, and vantage points etc. Definately the best game I've played so far on the PS5, after the slight disappointment that was DL2, and the disaster that was Elden Ring. I'm just having fun exploring and finding new things in such a colourful and lively world. I can't wait to see what Guerilla can do with a PS5 specific game, without any cross gen ties.

Yet DL2 and in special Elden Ring are doing better sales wise, fair or not, Elden Ring aint a disaster. No idea where the trash-talking comes from, not really the general though of any of those games.
If GG is to be believed, cross-gen didnt impact FW on the PS5 at all, according to themselfs they extracted what they could out of both hardware platforms. For this game, it wasnt the typical scaling up of settings that are seen in pc games. But hey, maybe their lying, but thats a different topic.

I'm speaking from my personal opinion, I found that DL2 didn't really bring any real advancement over DL1 in terms of gameplay, in fact the adding an artificial limit to how much time you could spend exploring was detrimental, and the time it spent in dev hell really shows in some places. I still completed it though. I just don't see any replay value in it like there was in DL1 which I dipped in and out of for years after it was launched.

With Elden Ring I believed the marketing, like a lot of people, when they said it was more approachable and was expecting a game where combat would be a challenge but you could explore and generaly enjoy the world building they had done. That turned out not to be the case, for me was a drab and frustrating experience that has now been binned. Basically a Souls 4 and nothing else. It's still very niche and all power to the people who actuallly enjoy it. I find more sophisticated games like the Witcher more to my taste. I had way more fun with Anthem than I did ER.

I'm not saying it was held back by being cross gen. I just want to see what they can do when focused purely on the PS5 and all its goodness.

And that is what GG has achieved according to their own statements.

Because you don't think they will do better when the next game will be current gen only. I am sure from a technological point of view Avatar will be better for example because it is only targeting current gen consoles and PC like The Matrix demo.

I assume that GG is not lying, but at the same time next Horizon will be much better since its PS5 only.
Because they made a designed and if they delivered on it for all platforms, then no platform was kept back by another platform.
When they only have to worry about 1 (or 2 if you count PC) instead of 3(4), it will mean more time to do more.

This is not rocket science, they do not want to go out and say PS5 could have been so much better, that is not good PR and they do not want to lie either, since that means somebody will probably find out later. No need to stoke the fanboy wares more than necessary.

Rift Apart is a ps5 native title, with ND also stating to optimally make use of the HW. Yet FW is according to most the more impressive title visually.

It was actually you who told me GG would develop different versions to not impact the ps5 version, and that it wouldnt be like your typical pc game scaling.

Yeah, dont get it either. Its a stab to GG to counter their claims with zero evidence whatsoever. Are people seriously dissapointed by what we got with FW somewhere? Its ’next gen’ enough, over anything else the platform has seen so far.

UE5 is a tech demo, avatar is a typical ubisoft CGI trailer.

Insomniac you mean. And by the time Rift Apart came out, Insomniac had already shipped two games for PS5: Spider-Man Remastered and Spider-Man Miles Morales. They are putting everybody else to shame!

It shouldn’t even be a debate that cross gen dramatically affects what can be achieved. Can anyone name a cross gen game that doesn’t look dated compared to focused titles of that generation?

They did two good version better than many title cross gen title, same thing for Forza Horizon 5. I was afraid it would like for example the last Ghost Recon but at the end no real usage of raytracing. My biggest concern was what we often see no real difference in term of Assets, this is what I have said GG will improve assets on PS5 and this is exactly what they've done and not only higher resolution texture but geometry too. At least it is there but for example from a lighting point of view the game is old gen, very well done like TLOU2 but this is probably the best they can do and it is time consuming for artists, lighting artists and technical artist. Rift Apart is probably more advanced from a technical point of view but this is a PIXAR anime style of graphics. People are often more impressed by more realistic graphics.

But at the end it continue to be designed for two consoles. For example the superstorm system presentation teaser at GDC said they design the effect to work well on PS4 and not only PS5.

Matrix is not fully pushing the CPU and have some margin for make a game. There is other stuff they do that will not be use in a game like fully simulate the city with Mass AI.

Wait a bit for Avatar because there are many things which doesn't look like CGI at all from a geometry point of view in the Avatar trailer. Will the game looks like this on PS5 and Xbox Series X? I don't think so but will it looks like this or not too far on a 3090 probably. Ubi soft present games on very high end PC not consoles. The most impressive things in the trailer is the usage of raytracing with vegetation, this is hard and some Massive programmer talked about the trailer on twitter and seems to be proud of the lighting engine mixed with vegetation.

And we will have probably a great interview of Massive devs

EDIT: Another old gen things in HFW is the management of geometry LOD. I hope it will improve in a PS5 only sequel and better shadows system.

Yes Insomniac, no idea why i mix those up :p

I hope so, UE5 games probably will look better than what FW is doing on PS5, but not a generation apart from that either.

I truly hope that you are right. It's just that i dont believe much of what Ubisoft shows in trailers and what actually becomes reality. Its almost certainly being demo-ed on a 24gb RTX3090, alot of system ram and a high end pc cpu for sure, if that trailer is what the game is going to look like. Not even UE5 demo is as impressive, very far from it. But as said i hope you're right, that would mean we have a true next generational leap of a game in terms of graphics.

Regarding Forbidden West, those graphics are something to behold, the best on PS5 (probably on all platforms in many regards), and that's coming from a pc gamer. It would not dissapoint me if that game is what we can expect from the average native PS5 game. Though, Insomniac/ND probably will top this like they did on the PS4 towards the latter end of the generation. same happened to the PS2 and the PS1.
Nice screens btw.

Finished after 59h. Best looking game I've ever played so kudos for Guerrilas that they managed to deliver even tough its still crossgen. Didn't enjoy much Horizon 1 but here almost all aspects are improved. Better npc dialogs, world is much richer, side quests tough not usualy very deep enjoyable enough to spent time outside of main quest (very impressive npc dialogs animations in sidequests) . Main strengths of game are very fun fight system and of course beautiful world. Sometimes I just prefered to walk few kilometers instead to use mount just to admire environment. Narration was improved vs h1 but still its not on level of games like rdr2 and lou2 (tough Im also not big fan of scifi). 9/10

assasins creed 1 and 2, assasins creed unity

AC Unity looks great on PC. I am not sure the game will look as good on PC than this demo but not so far on very high end PC and this time they are targeting only current gen console, Stadia, Luna and PC. No outdated PS4 and Xbox One to support.

AC 1&2 were generally before they went all out on bullshots for their games I think, and yeah AC was definitely very impressive for its time. AC Unity was the first (and only?) fixed ToD and baked lighting of the series.

Subjective though isn't it. Rift Apart had Raytracing Performance and Quality modes, FW doesn't use RT at all.

All it means is that GG can make a really good looking game, just like ND could with TLoU2 on a PS4 Pro. You don't need RT to make a really good looking game, it just sells the quality of the visuals a bit more if the game has RT.

Hell! Spider-man 2018 was impressive, Spider-man 2020 with RT even more so!

If the performance is there RT can surpass what normal rasterization can do in the right hands. Its all about trade-offs and for the PS5 im sure its better to do magic without it, like GG has shown.
