Hitachi P37-HR01 BR Display Settings

Hi,

I recently purchased a Hitachi Plasma P37-HR01 with a native resolution of 1024×1080 using the ALiS technology. I am very happy with the display as all of the major broadcast networks here in Japan support 1080i, and PS3 games look great in 720P.

I've been using my PS3 set to 720P for both BR and Games, however, as the television is able to accept a 1080i and a 1080P signal, I'm starting to wonder if perhaps I would be able to enjoy a higher quality image at either the 1080i or 1080P settings.

Generally I prefer to go with a progressive setting for games, and I'm a little suspicious of the television's ability to output 1080P, as it's not a 1080P television. When I switched it over to 1080P I noticed a small amount of flicker in the PS3 XMB, but could not notice the same effect in-game. Does this tv really support 1080P, or am I better off going with 720P?

I often hear people say you should match your television's native output, which I imagine is 1080i, but what resolution would I really be beter off using for BR 720P, 1080i, or 1080P? A friend of mine told me that 1080i is fine for movies because they usually have a frame rate of 24FPS, but I was under the impression that this was always bumped up to 60hz by the output device.

I would appreciate any advice anyone could give.

Sincerely,
Oninotsume

Hi RobertR1,

Thanks for the AVS Forum advice. It looks like my current settings of using 720P are the best with 1080i for broadcast HD. I had no idea I would be getting myself into the great "720P vs 1080i" debated:oops:

Thanks again.
