marconelly! said:Isnb't HDR supposed to be performance free on G70? Or what exactly does their 'full speed HDR' comment mean?It is like the 30fps vs 60fps issue. Do you go for 30fps with prettier graphics or 60fps and smoother? But with HDR + SSAA it is kind of a double whammy as both are pretty intensive.
Well what does it mean? Games (like FC) were basically unplayable with HDR, even at 1024x768, with NV40. Are they claiming playable framerates or "no performance penalty"? I have not spent a lot of time looking at the benchmarks and comparing them so I cannot say (been too busy unfortunately). I do know they were trumpeting minimal hit with AA, but if you look at 1600x1200 with 4xAA it takes a huge hit in modern games like D3 and Farcry (in the ~40% range).
One rule always applies to ATI and NV: Wait until we isolate a feature in a game or benchmark to see the realworld hit before we jump on their claims. "If" is a good word. Kind of like "Of Xenos is 95% effecient" and "If there is only a 5% performance hit for 4x AA on Xenos" type stuff. Big "Ifs".
And that is when they are trumpeting real numbers we can evaluate. More vague terms make me more catious. But that is just me. That said just checked [H] and it seems G70 was able to hit 45fps with HDR, Soft Shadows, with 16x AF at 1600x1200. But I would like to know what it was without HDR (which they do not give). They would give us at least a hint at pontial issues. HDR did not seem to make much of a difference in SC:CT so I think in some ways I think we will need to wait for same games designed with the feature in mind before we know exactly what we are looking at.
Of course some links on this would be nice if anyone had some. I guess I am a pesimist seeing as how I have an NV40
Oh, I see. Could it be just one 7800 with SSAA? That means SSAA can be used, but MSAA can't, right?
Yes, one G70 can do SSAA. The issue is performance. One G70 can do SSAA on older games, but newer games are a big performance hit. That is why on a site like [H] you only see SSAA recommended on the SLI setup.
If we look at the "target" Sony is aiming for (KZ2, MotorStorm, WarHawk, Tekken, and so forth) it is hard to imagine them having enough resources to toss SSAA on top of the already outstanding visuals they are aiming for.
