HardOCP's position on the 3DMark2003/Nvidia issue

Why are people attacking FM and ET over this? When investigation produces something you don't like, you get all censorial about it?

Of course it's a word.

Edit - I thought you were joking when you asked whether it was, lol. Better say you were now to save face - unless you want to be all censorial about it.

MuFu.

Actually censorial is a word. Tsk tsk to those that don't know their native tongue. :p

p.s.: That is if english is indeed your native tongue. ;)

Natoma:

er... yeah, that's it.. I'm from... er... Mars.

Yes. Mars. Northern Region. Lots of open space. Great views. Not much rain.

thanks MuFu someone with intelligence.

I suggest the rest of you check a dictionary before making wisecracks :)

and Nite-Lark it's Randell ;)

Because given the information we have, there's no real way to defend nVidia on this, or discredit the evidence. ;) So if you're partial to nVidia, you try and discredit the messenger, rather than the message itself.

Randell:

Actually, it was a semi-serious question, I really *was* wondering if it was a word, I've never actually heard it used before. :)

P.S: sorry for the name mispelling. :)

Who's suggesting that?

someone did earlier, EvilDeus I think, that may be a libel though. I wasnt suggesting you, I was saying it was part of the deflecting tactics.

heh no problem

well all I see are a lot of nVidia people here ignoring some very simple conclusions that can be drawn here

1. if nVida has not done so already they can put in software that scanns the keyboar for certain time demo commands and activate the nessessary clip planes and deactivate them if they detect the key presses that pause the demo or whatever during the timing run.

2. why is it when you run less popular demos that Nvidia looses to ATi? Turn on the eyecandy and it is still game over for the 5900.

we are all loosers in this whole mess

What did OpenGL guy say that made you believe ATI is in the same boat?
He is simply implying that ATi is capable of doing the same things.
There's a large difference between owning a gun and shooting someone with it.

Does this mean ATi hasn't made mistakes before? No. Quake/Quack was before my tenure with the company. However, in my mind, the problem was resolved adequately because the image quality problem was solved and performance remained the same (it actually improved later).

However, the "splash screens" incident was less than a year ago and now we have the "clip planes and color clears" incident. Sure, you can't easily see these "optimizations", but what makes them even less savory, in my opinion is that they only apply to a couple of specific benchmarks. These "optimizations" don't help UT2003 performance. They don't help Quake 3 or Jedi Knight either. They only help a couple of synthetic benchmarks, one of which the company in question poo-pooed from release, even going so far as to invest resources into making a white paper basically describing how to cheat. Maybe they never meant to publish that white paper afterall since it really reads more like a "How to cheat at 3D Mark 2003" paper. I guess they can add in new chapters about "clip planes" and "color clears" with the next revision. :D

OGL Guy I for one am glad to see that ATi did learn from the Quack/Quake thingie. It is also worth to note that ATi's drivers DO NOT operate in the mannor that nVidia's drivers do.

I believe that ATi has come a long way in terms of perfomance and morality... This definately will pay off for them in the long run.

We're judging computers parts by their moral character now?!

****walks over to computer. lifts up hood. checks everything out.*****

Yup. I'm going to hell.

(Apologies for nonsensicality. I haven't slept in two days)

*We* are judging the moral actions of the companies that make these inanimate objects.

PS What did you see?
