Halo: Reach

I'm really liking that psycho Spartan's headgear. I want a skull helmet like that.

It's sorta army-of-twoish. I'm slightly bummed that we see Spartans without helmets, though I understand they have to differentiate them somehow. I sorta wanted them to be ugly like Darth Vader.

I don't like seeing their faces, feels weird and takes away some of the mystery.
Plus the facial modelling is still kinda off, faces are too glossy (and too round?) certainly not as good as Mass Effect, Uncharted or even Gears 2.

I think some of the leaked pics are similar to what was shown.
Like this one, note the impressive shading on the gun

that looks smooth, are there any leaked shots of reach that show any sort of jagged edges?

well, I'd stick with comparing them to other console fps's like killzone2 or something like it.

and both mass effect, and Uncharted's characters were pretty glossy too.

as for gears of war2's they had their own set of differences.

no still, killzone2.

I liked that Halo had a vibrant look before, but I guess everything is going the muted, gritty way and they're adjusting to what the consumers are asking for.
Now that we have millions and millions of colors, we have reached the holy grail of graphics: grays and sepia tones!

Is that from a cutscene? It wouldn't be fair to compare if it isn't.

Seems like a good representation of skin to me. Leaps and bounds better than ODST and better than Gears IMO.

Are killzone cutscenes enhanced like other games though? That looks like its definitely a cutscene but it looks like it uses the same graphics as seen in gameplay where as Its likely that the reach trailer uses similar methods as in the halo 3, re5 and some uncharted 2 in engine scenes.

I think people are criticizing the faces because the faces are easily the weakest part graphically of the Halo Reach trailer, even though it might be better than most faces in most of Halo Reach's competition. Everything looks so quasi-realistic in that Reach trailer that in comparison, the faces stand out in a negative way. A classical case of the uncanny valley.

This.:D

It depends on the cutscene. Some cutscenes seem to have highly enhanced facial models, while other scenes seem closer to in-game graphics. It probably depends on just how much background geometry there is. The opening scene is just in a hallway, while some other scenes take place in much more complex battlefields.

Can love blossom on the battlefield?

Well, MW2 is pretty colorful, that cyborg girl in Reach has absurdly blue armor, and if we extrapolate from Gears 1 to Gears 2, Gears 3 will take place in a lush, blossoming jungle... don't whine about grays and sepias now the industry is moving fast in the opposite direction!

Halo series has always had very diverse envornments (maybe except ODST which was mostly urban) and I expect the same to be true here. The first level in Halo CE was entirely grey, The Library was very dark etc. It's about the right mix of environments and moods, something Bungie is exellent at.

Can anyone tell me why some people think face modeling is bad? It looks rather good IMO, better than in vast majority of games.

Yes some stuff. Added self-shadowing IIRC higher shadowmap res. If you check out DF KZ2 analysis it might shed some more light on it. Will probably be same with Reach as in U2 and RE5 cutscenes.

It's from a cut scene, since i don't have a capture card i was googling myself to death for a nice ingame closeup pic of Tomas Sev. (or any main character)

it doesn't look too bad i hope, if anyone can find better i would be happy to use it.:smile2:

yeah, very good facial detail and scars too.

you know, that character seems to have a bit of a suntan when comparing it to killzone2's.

also, one is very tan and happy while the other is gloomy and pale.:smile2:

The faces have a lot of detail, so technically they're excellent its just artistically they seem off.

The faces seem too round? and too glossy. And the eyes look kind of dead.

Compare this to Mass Effect 2 which might have less facial detail technically but looks better due to the art.

Even Gears 2 which definitely has much less detail on the character models has more believable faces

I dunno the Reach faces just seem a bit uncanny valley to me (though they are far far better than H3), hopefully they don't take off their helmets much, the armor models look amazing

Why does that guy look like he has breast with upside down nipples in that armour?

These pics are really beginning to confuse me. The games they represent do not look that good in action... do they? Mass effect I definitely suspect changes character detail during the conversation close ups but still there seems to be a little too much detail. Would be great to know who the source of the pictures are in most cases.

I was asking if killzone did similar because those pics really aren't that great. Looks pretty much like what the in-game graphics look like with models up close.

Gears faces are very far from believable, actually. Monstrous jaws and necks, can't see people like that even in a russian gym ;)

I think the trouble is that the male face in Reach is not getting enough direct light and thus the skin shader gets a bit messed up. The girl, who stands in direct light, looks a lot better, although she's admittedly not the usual 'game babe' beauty.

I've known American Football Players, weight lifters and boxers. There isn't anything unrealistic about the Gears faces, although they focus on one extreme.

In fact compared to many NFL Linemen (heck even College) the necks in Gears are positively slim... :)

The one oddity in that screenshot above is that their bodies are too slim for their supposed muscular bulk. especially when you take into account they are supposedly wearing heavy/bulky armor.

IE - the Head, Arms, and legs are about the right proportions, but the chest seems absolutely tiny.

Regards,
SB
