Halo 2 sells ___ million first day

And the honest truth is that the XBOX platform just doesn't have anything like HALO, it has plenty of mediocre selling titles but very very few million sellers.
Do you happen to know how many Xbox games have sold a million copies? I'd kinda like to know and you imply you know.

Any XBOX owner that likes FPS games should buy it since games of this size and quality is rare on the XBOX.
That's a rather odd thing to say. Most people would agree that the size and quality of Halo 2 is rare on every platform. Also, the Xbox has quite a few games worth buying. It's not as destitute as you imply.

And i'm just as sure (from my own experience) it's nothing big compared to PC FPS (old i know).
In terms of innovating, no, it's nothing big. However, the game is quite fun. Why it is inherently inferior to stuff on the PC is beyond me.

This is from a list of 53 titles that all sold at least 1 million copies in North America, the data is from around July 2004 so it's not 100% fresh, but it's a strong indicator.

3,247,316 XBX Halo (Microsoft)
1,432,977 XBX Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell (UbiSoft)
1,148,135 XBX Project Gotham: World Street Racer (Microsoft)
1,024,687 XBX Grand Theft Auto Double Pack (Rockstar)

Want me to post the other 49 titles?

Edit: All my HALO2 comments about PC FPS is of course 100% personal, i just find Battlefield, Call Of Duty, CS, UT2004, Doom3, Tribes2, NOLF, MOH, Farcry, Quake series hell even Operation Flashpoint more exciting and fun than the HALO series :)

Keep in mind that the US, while a very big market, is still not everything. There's Europe, Asia, and the rest of America for example... Many other games could've made it past 1 million - in fact, Halo must have sold another million copies in the rest of the world based on Bungie's figures of 4.5.

Exactly. It only takes into account NPD data.

Of course, I expect the number of PS2 million sellers to increase when using global numbers, too. So it's not as though I expect any level or parity between the two. I just wondered.

Also, NDP doesn't fully cover the US market, right? I recall someone saying it tracks only ~70% of the stores...

Keep in mind that the US is the absolute biggest XBOX market, with around 10 million consoles or 2/3's of the total sales. Compared with 1/3 of the PS2 and 1/2(?) of the Gamecube sales?

What you are looking at is the absolute best case for XBOX games.

Just to throw another stick on the fire, couldn't these numbers indicate a strong use of mods and pirate copies?

When I go to a games shop, or a supermarket or anywhere where they sell games, there are about 5 copies of Halo for xbox on the shelves, a couple of PC Halo's, and who knows how many they have in storage.... there must be at least 300 shops here in Finlad where you can buy Halo1 and Halo2.
Now if you count that every shop has average 10 copies of Halo still waiting for the buyer, that would make 3000 unsold copies of Halo in Finland alone.

Now, let's assume there are 20 countries in Europe selling Halo with average 10 copies in every Halo selling store, there would be average 300 stores in every country (I think this could be an overestimate).

20 x 3000 = 60 000 unsold copies of Halo in Europe that still count as "copies sold" in quoted sales numbers.

Now, let's add U.S. and Canada
I really have no idea how many shops there would be, but I think it is a little more than in Europe, let's assume 7000 stores, with the same 10 unsold copies of Halo.
That would make 70 000 unsold copies of Halo in U.S. and Canada stores that still count as "copies sold" in quoted sales numbers.

Europe + U.S = 130 000

Add to that the far east and Australia, I throw a number of 50 000 here.
South America 5000.
Africa 3000
Russia 2000

And the online only stores, like Amazon, I estimate 10 000.

Total unsold copies of Halo in stores around the world 200 000.

what did I want to prove with these made up numbers, that must not be accurate at all......... I don't remember any more, I spent too much time spinning those numbers that I lost my point

Halo 2's reported 2.38 million-copy first day North American sales is the figure sold through to consumers, not just stores.

Says who?
I never believe the sales numbers from any company.
I'm not saying it is not possible, but I'd just like to see where that number is from.

It is Microsoft's estimate. They have exact numbers on shipments and poll their retailers throughout the day. That's how any of these figures are ever obtained initially, and independent tracking firm, the NPD Group, then samples their channels to try to provide verification later.

Including pre-orders?

Does it matter? Why get so hung up on preorders and sellVSshipped... The game is amazing, it will sell like hotcakes, just enjoy the ride!

I'm pretty sure Microsoft's numbers are more accuate that NPD's numbers can get. IIRC there is one major store that NPD leaves out and that is Walmart. I don't know if this is still the case but if it is then all the figures of games can be upped by around 20% give or take. If they do include Walmart now then NPD is more accurate. But it still wouldn't be as accurate as each console manufacturer that can track the number of games sold by a variety of methods. One of those methods is by the SKU.

I'm curious, because if it does include them it isn't that huge, given that Warcraft 3 set a record a few years back with 4.5million pre-orders. Incidentally, apparently that's more sales than all titles in the first two months of the XBOX and Gamecube's release. Not sure what the North American figures are like though, and no doubt WC3 was much bigger in Asia (especially Korea) than Halo.
