Halo 1 & 2 in 720P

Yes!!
I was hoping that I could play Halo 2 in 720p and now it's official, this is the best news in YEARS!... Well I'm kidding, but I will definately give both Halo's another go.

Wow this is awsome I never finished playing through Halo2 when it came out now I can sit down and play halo 1 and 2 in 720p, too cool.

Hopefully this works for Fable too another game I never finished

As was mentioned in the update, the 720p pic was not a direct feed capture, but a capture from a video.

Anyone want to try explaining how they're getting 720p + 4xAA or even 2xAA with a game that probably wasn't made with tiling in mind? (Halo CE especially and probably Halo 2 unless they were told to make the game using tiling back in 2003...:p)

Also worth noting is that they've passed 7 million copies of Halo2... What other game has sold more than this, apart from the GTA games?

Final Fantasy X-2
Gran Turismo 3
Gran Turismo 4

And I can think of 3-4 other PS2 games in the 6-7 million range off the top of my head.

7 million for FFX2?? Maybe for FFX, which i'm pretty sure sold more than FFX2. But i'm not sure it reached 7M figures...

Dragon Quest sold a lot and was never even released in Europe.

I don't see why they would need tiling, the main memory should work just fine.

But is noone else bothered by the fact that the spit screen shot doesn't have any AA and the shot from the first Halo is just upscaled?

Simply put, they're not. It is being upscaled to 720p and rendered in 480p.

This shows, on the left the original 480i (No AA) shot that Bungie provided but upscaled (by me) to 720p. On the right we have the 720p capture they provided (With AA). In the instance where AA was not implemented on the sarge's left trouser pocket (The emulation I guess isn't perfect), the aliasing artefacts are identical. If Halo 2 was being rendered at 720p the aliasing would be 1 pixel wide as shown in this 720p Madden shot:

The only logical conclusion is that the game is being rendered at 480p with AA applied and then upscaled to 720p.

How did this thread get to two pages before someone explained that? :D

Vid capture or not, they're not native 720P.

I think you have something there. It must be the analog video out chip scaling the game to 720p, not Xenos rendering it at 720p....

ah, well that's interesting. That's probably what they were referring to when they said they'd explain the resolutions this Friday.

Clearly this is not a good solution given limited use of AA in certain titles. UE3.0 wasn't made for tiling, and at this time GoW isn't using AA. If it's such a simple matter of using main memory, then there'd be no reason to ask in the first place, and there would not have been pages of discussion about tiling and engines.

Jesus Christ, some more info you've pulled from I don't know where. FF X-2 has not sold 7 million copies.

Very few series can sell 7 million in North America alone, GTA and maybe madden. I don't think the FF series approaches those numbers (these days) in NA, worldwide yes.

I can't wait to hear more about the xenos tv-out chip. It seems that it upscales and downscales independent of native resolution. Figre thats good when you have to support 480i,480p,720p,1080i, and maybe 1080p tv output. With native resolution probably being 720p internally on most games.

Final Fantasy X performs around 6~7M units worldwide.

~2.5M in Japan
~2.3M in USA
>2M units in Europe

Final Fantasy X-2:

~2M in Japan
~1.4M in USA
I don't have numbers for Europe, but considering how critisized the game was, I think it performed very well!

Also Kingdom Hearts did fine:

~810.000 units for Japan + 330.000 units for the Final Mix version!
~2.5M in USA (and it's still selling very well).
I don't know for Europe but considering it has been a long time in the Greatest Hits collection, so I assume it performed well too!

Gran Turismo 3:

~1.7M in Japan
~3.8M in USA (and It's still selling)
>5M in Europe (don't have precise numbers though)

Gran Turismo 4:

~1.1M in Japan (don't forget though the prologue edition did very nice (~730.000 units))
~1.4M in USA (for now, but it has to be in the Greatest Hit collection yet!)
>2M in Europe (same situation than USA).

Halo:

~4M in USA
>2M in Europe

Halo 2 + the limited edition:

~4.8M in USA
~2-2.5M in Europe

Good lord at those Europe sales!

Halo:

~4M in USA
>2M in Europe

Halo 2 + the limited edition:

~4.8M in USA
~2-2.5M in Europe

So are Halo and Halo 2 the second biggest franchise when you're looking at the U.S. market only? How much did Vice City and San Andreas sell in the U.S. alone?

GTA Vice City:

6.6M in USA
Certainly a crapload too in Europe

GTA San Andreas:

5.8M in USA
