The improved handling, making the GT experience even more "realistic" than before, new (and very very old
) cars, new tracks.
Those are enough reasons for a GT upgrade, and I'm sure many will be happy with those, I know I'll be.
And anyway, how many innovative features can you add to a car driving game without turning it into a fantasy gadgety racing game. I already have my doubts of the b-spec mode as being too gimmicky.
GT series are mostly pure driving experience, I find it hard to imagine how they could change the basic concept much without turning it into something completely different, and not a GT game any more.
Edit: I can't think but just a couple of things they could add/improve in the GT series, and even those are not very critical to the gameplay (except one) but more just "nice gimmicks" and graphical touches.
It'd be fun to hear what those who critisize it as "turning south" would like improved/changed/added.
Things I
don't want to see in a Gran Turismo game:
1. Damage modelling. As long as it cannot be done close to perfect, leave it out. A few scratches, blown tyre and wonked steering is just annoying. Damage modelling should be subtle with enough variations so that you wouldn't even "feel" or see the damage, but it would subtly affect the cars performance (even on a longer term). Driving the car in a videogame is still more unresponsive than in real life, so you'll easier drive in the game in a way that would damage the car irl. When the driving experience is closer to realism in games, avoiding damage will be more intuitive, instead of just dodging the pixels.
Things I'd
like to see added in a GT game.
1. Modelled interiors, so that you could view the car from inside in the "showroom" screen. Also modelled engine department etc...
This will of course require (too) much work from the developer, and more powerful consoles than this gen. Maybe a QuickTime VR type presentation would suffice until then. Also an interior view during racing.
2. Variable weather and time of day during (longer) races.
3. Better AI. Though when (if) GT is playable on net, real players will replace the artificial intteligence drivers, though then things could even go worse than they are now.
4. A virtual workshop where you could actually use a simplish integrated 3D package to build new parts to your car (within limits, I would not want a "pimp my GT ride" game), and repair damaged parts.
5. Virtual cities with free roaming courses. There you would actually be encouraged to drive according to traffic regulations. If for example you drive through red traffic lights you would be fined, and after enough fines your in game driving licence would be taken away for a short period of time during which you would not be allowed to drive in any of the game modes
