Great games with bad reviews and vice versa!

Maybe it's just me, but I will never understand why GT3 received such great reviews. The game plays just like the two previous versions, which had problems, and really only improved in graphics. Will they ever get around to fixing the AI?

There is one improvement in gameplay that GT3 is worth the money: Force Feedback Wheel. The graphics improvement is a welcome too, it has smoother frame rate, than the previous two. I thought the AI suppose to be self adjusting, ie if you suck the AI will suck as well, so if you want to fix the AI, get better I guess.

the skill is taken away and replaced with autoaim, smacks it my ass..
even on 56k I will take the PC version anyday

XBL GR has autoaim? That's news to me.. heh. Try both before you make an opinion, I did, as did many reviewers.

Uhm, Yes it does have autoaim, it doesnt have near the precision required in the PC version, and I have tried both, ghost recon sucks balls on a controller, I will take mouse, keyboard, mods anyday, all Xbox adds is voicechat(which I had already anyways), and crappy controls.

Voice chat & net play on a 56k?

not on my Xbox no, but on my PC, yes, been doing it for years, Teamsound uses very little bandwidth.

Back in the QuakeWorld day, anything under 5000-7500 rate was unacceptable (I played at 10k). On top of that, a Roger Wilco server would use upwards of 15-20k/sec for a 10 man team, usually around ~3k/sec for a client.

So again,

Ah, the joys of being on broadband since 1996 :D

Alien Front Online on Dreamcast uses the microphone for voice chat during netplay over the 56k modem. Worked decently, too.

It's too bad the progress with Dreamcast online got set back after SEGA left the hardware business, because Visual Concepts was talking about some big things for the 2K3 sports line-up at one time. They were thinking of having a netplay mode for broadband users where they could participate in a game with a group of other gamers, all manning their own specific player position for a team. People could play specifically as a linebacker, or a quarterback, or a running back, etc. The computer would fill in the other players as necessary, and you'd be able to switch positions too if you set it that way. That would've been a lot of fun with teams, clans, and leagues since the sports games would be supporting ten to twenty gamers at once, depending on the sport, and you could play from your own position authentically if you wanted.

I played, and still play many games on my 56k.. I dont really use voicechat anymore, it was never really a problem, the quality was good, I just find peoples voices a distraction, its very intrusive. I can type just as fast as anyone can talk, so its not like I need voice.

Self adjusting, i.e. rubber band AI. The AI always follows the same path around the track and may speed up or slow down depending on how good you are. IMO this is the worst AI there is, plus the AI has other problems as well. The AI doesn't play the other cars; it doesn't try and block opponents and fight for position, the other cars are just there racing as if they are by themselves. It makes the game feel like you are doing time trials all the time.

The racing line perhaps ? Its a racing game, surely if the AI is any good it should follow the racing line.

It doesn't fight for position ? what made you say that ?

In one of the Rally race, I remember the AI try to outbrake me in one of the corner, and I watched it crashed.

In one of the closer race, I remember the 3 top AI car fighting for position. It become interesting, when it come to a hairpin.

Maybe what you mean, the AI don't sway around like mad to block opponent car ?

It makes the game feel like you are doing time trials all the time.

That only happend when your car is significantly faster than the rest, and you are leading by a nice margin in the first position. You won't be feeling like time trials, if you are on second place or lower. Or another case, is when you have no hope of winning the race ;)

What made me say it, the truth! The AI does not fight for position, you may see them trying to bump each other out of the way, but this is not fighting for position, it is bad AI. Good AI would go around the car in front of them, not bump them from behind until they finally get the position. And believe me, I'm not the only one that can't stand the AI. I know many other people that feel the same way, and most reviews of the game also mention something about the AI. Here is an excerpt from the IGN review;

I've driven around the track following the AI drivers, and watched them closely. They all follow a strict line. If another AI car gets in the way, they bump each other out of the way. There's no attempt to drive around one another -- they just bump and jostle until one gets ahead of the other, and then they follow the line again. It looks OK from a distance, because there's no damage, and the bumping is usually subtle. But follow behind and you can see how it works.

I guess I just expected more than everyone else from the third game in a series. It still has some of the same flaws as GT, like being able to bounce off of walls and other cars without losing really any speed. Maybe a newb to the series would like it, but fans of the previous games hopeing for the gameplay to get an upgrade I'd think would be disappointed.

The car bumping each other out ? They do touch sometimes, but they don't rammed into each other.

Anyway, you can only go around the car, if your car is significantly faster than the car you are over taking.

Again, in a straight, you can only drive around if your car is significantly faster than the car you are over taking. If not you will be at serious disadvantage by going off your racing line.

But the AI do try to outbrake each other in corners, if they have a close race.

You can bounce off walls in real car in such a way that you don't lost much speed. You'll be damage in real car though, the damage is what make you lose speed eventually.

Bouncing off walls don't really decrease your time anyway. My dissapointment, was that on some tracks, you can cut off the track, to decrease your lap time, that's a bigger problem, than any other problems IMO. In F1 games, you get drive through penalty, not in GT series though.

Like I said before the big plus on this one is the Force Feedback Wheel, it was the first on console. And it adds significantly to the enjoyment of the game. If you don't like the AI, link up your system, and play with your friends, its always better like that. The bouncing of walls, etc will only be solved if they implement a proper damage system, like in most F1 games.

And I am not even sure, if Sony actually pays every car manufacturer for license, or they actually gets it for free (much like Bond movie), that they are very reluctant in regard to damage.

Sony pays license fees for the cars; however the licenses for damaging cars is much more costly, since most car manufacturers aren't quite happy to see their shiny new expensive cars to be damaged.

any final fantsy game after 6. They had to be the worse crap made for a system in years. I wouldn't give them more than a 5 each. Yet every mag gave them 8-10. Zelda majora's mask , it got like an 8 and yet it should have had a 6.

Game everyone should have given 10s to is panzer dragoon saga. Easly the best rpg of the 32bit gen. But it being on a sega system it gets no respect.

I disagree, FFVII really makes you work your brain out to understand it (and nothing really gets explained until the last 2-3 hours or so anyway); IMO it was fantastic. IX wasn't bad either.

Majora's Mask deserved its scores, I simply don't understand how people can praise OoT so much and immediately turn around and slam MM... MM was built to be more original and creative, and did both magnificently while maintaining core gameplay identical to OoT. IMO, MM is the better game; OoT was a bit disappointing to me... far too many parallels between it and LttP... it just feels rushed in that respect.

Tagrineth - I played them all.... except ten which is horrible and i can't believe game informer picked it as num 3 of this years top ten. The story lines are tired. The charactors just feel like rehashes of older chars . The game play is eh... I dunno i just haven't cared for them in a long time. I think once it became "the rpg" they have rushed to put out sequal after sequal and the quality has demished.

Another game that i think sucks . gta 3 and vice city. Got bored of the game after 5 hours , beat it after 15. The music was good but i could just download those songs and play them while playing quake 3 for killing things... I dunno i have very wierd tastes . Best rpg ever is phantsy star. Don't believe me go and play it. Great game. Made me cry. For computer its the ultimas. Whatever. I'm glad you enjoyed the final fantsys but i just have to ask . Have you ever played 1-6 ? All of those are much better than 7-10.

I think Blinx got trashed by reviewers unfairly, but actually but sold quite well. I stayed away from it because of the bad reviews, but now that it's cheaper, I'm considering purchasing it. I haven't played a platformer since Mario64.

Of course I've played 1-6 :p

I beat 4 and 6's US versions before VII was even out. :)

IMO 7 is the best in the series... the characters didn't feel like rehashes to me at all. The materia system was usable and abusable but at least it took some work and lateral thought to break it, unlike Junction. ::shudder::

Did you beat 7? Or if not how far did you get? Most of 7 really doesn't make sense until you're through the Whirlwind Maze...

It's like FF5, most people say 'story? what story?', but there IS a story - once you pass the first world...
