Graphics evolution in this console generation?

Back to the original topic, I think that tools like the Sony performance analyzer can help developers improve their game's performance, which can translate into better graphics.

I haven't heard of equivalent tools for Xbox or GameCube, but I have heard of similar tools for NVIDIA PC hardware. So maybe Xbox developers do their performance tuning on the PC version of their game, and it applies to the Xbox as well.
 
I skipped most of the cutscenes in MGS2, it looks awful, and its pretty boring, its mostly just people talking.

That's cool if you didn't like them. I thought they had some of the best camera work and direction as far as videogame cut scenes go.
