*God Of War 3 Thread v2.0 + Interview Stig Asmussen

Picked it up today.

The first "level" of the game is really visually impressive. I'm not quite sure how they did it, but the end result is great. There's a lot of stuff going on. I can't tell if all of the Titans are real-time, and it's hard to see when and if there are transitions to prerecorded video. Sometimes I feel like the backdrop is basically a video. However they're doing it, it's quite an achievement. The second level, on the other hand, doesn't look nearly as interesting, and I find it a little dull. It looks pretty nice, but it isn't in the same league as the first level.

The frame rate has improved quite a bit from the demo. Played the demo yesterday so I'd have it fresh in my mind today. There were noticeable frame drops that don't occur in the retail game. The new AA is really nice. The game looks very sharp. In the second level you'll see lines in the distance that seem to shimmer or crawl. I'm not sure if that's caused by aliasing, but everything up close looks sharp.

For gameplay I think it'll come down to how big a fan you are of the first few games. Things really haven't changed at all. If you've grown a little tired of the combat after the first few games, this one doesn't really do anything to spice it up, other than the visuals. If you love the combat in the series, then this one will probably blow you away, because it plays the same (well) and looks a hell of a lot better. Does Kratos only roll in 9 directions? Sometimes I feel like he isn't rolling where I want him to, and it can be a huge pain in the ass when trying to evade boss attacks that hit a large area. There was also a boss attack that I was evading that seemed to suck me back into it, which was a huge pissoff for me.

I have to note, I've already encountered a few bugs which were MASSIVE aggravation for me. While fighting
Poseiden in the first level
, I fell through the world geometry twice and died. It was hard to tell where I fell because the camera automatically panned far out and then the screen darkened.

Oh, and my absolute dumbest death was
during the QTE to kill Poseidon. Basically you're watching through Poseidon's eyes as Kratos beats the crap out of him. You get the usual button prompts, but at one point it asked me to press "L3 + R3". It took me a second to realize what that was, so I didn't press it in time. Then I hear this crappy zappy noise and the screen goes dark and it says, "You died." What the fuck? Kratos' face was still on screen, looking angry and perfectly not dead, but somehow I'd died. I'm not sure what it was. Maybe Poseidon can shoot mind bolts that kill people and leave them with paralysis. I don't know, but it was stupid and annoying because I had to repeat the whole sequence again.

As a note about audio, the sound and music are great. The voice acting is not, and the voice recording/processing is not either. I'm playing with some really nice headphones, and I'm having the same experience I had with Assassin's Creed 2. I can almost tell the voices were recorded in a perfectly silent sound booth. The voices sound detached from the rest of the world. Not to mention the voice of one of the titans, gaea, sounds like an older woman, not like the voice of a massive creature made of stone. Her voice doesn't have any personality at all. The gods, on the other hand, have powerful voices. Not sure why they went that route with the titan.

Before I get flamed, I'd just like to point out that I like the game, and I'm enjoying the game. My post may seem negative, but I'm just pointing out some of the things I have issue with, or had a bad experience with. There will be a billion posts repeating all of the same positives. This wouldn't be a 10/10 for me. But to be clear, I was never a massive fan of the first two. I liked them, and though they were solid games. Anyone that is a big fan of the first two will probably love this game to death.

So far, the violence isn't bothering me. It's definitely brutal. I'm not offended by the nudity on the medusas. Nudity doesn't bother me, although virtual nudity seems pathetic to me in a lot of ways. I'm not looking forward to the sex scene, not because I think it's offensive to have sex in a game, but because I think it's sad. Maybe I can skip it, or maybe I've already missed it (doubt it). Not sure when it happens.

I believe
Gaia was the narrator for the first two GoWs. May be irritating to have unnatural voice.
She sounds fine to me. The smaller gods may need to have a loud and deep voice to have a comparable presence. The Titans already have enough screen presence. ^_^

Agreed--the game opens up with such a massivily impressive segment that the second section of the game does feel a little less impressive, but I think it's a nice change of pace.

Agreed--it's very much the same, but to be fair they've now made all the weapons enjoyable and practical. I used all the weapons for different situations. You'll see. :)

Does Kratos only roll in 9 directions?

It's 8 directions--right?

There was also a boss attack that I was evading that seemed to suck me back into it, which was a huge pissoff for me.

Jumping instead of rolling. :)

I've now played through the introduction 5 times and not once did I fall through the game world. Are you sure it wasnt a ledge?

It's 8 directions--right?

Yeah, you're right. It would be 8 directions.

Jumping instead of rolling. :)

Could be. It seemed I'd easily roll out of the way if he'd roll in the direction I'd wanted.

In the segment fighting poseidon, where he hits you with his fist, or stabs at you with his trident, I was standing in front of him, hitting him with my blades, when I'd just randomly fall through the ground and die. Maybe I walked too far forward and fell between him and the ledge. I don't know. But it seemed like I fell straight through the ground. Either way, I wouldn't expect to be able to fall between him and the ledge either.

I hope that isn't the reasoning they came up with. Her voice sounds completely disconnected from the character. For one, it's soft and seems to carry the same weight as a human voice, yet she's probably several hundred feet tall, made of rock, and weighing several thousand tons.

Inspired by Mike Tyson?

Yes, I remember she has a human voice from the first two games.

I liked her narration. She's supposed to be very old. Will have to see how different it is compared to others.

I find Vanille's voice more awkward.

Most of the way through the second level, almost at the second boss, I think.

I've got to say, the visuals in this game really are impressive. I don't really like the art design in the second level, and there are some spots where it looks a little bland, but the spots that look great are really top notch.
The forger is really cool. In closeup, he doesn't have a really high-res skin, but when you're running around in that room with him doing his work in the background, it really looks spectacular. If you stand close enough to him, at one point when he's sharpening that big piece of metal, you'll clip through his finger, so it really is a big 3D model there. It's so well animated, it looks like a video.

The other thing I find really striking, and I'm not sure what causes it, but sometimes the image looks like it has real depth to it. I'm not sure if it's motion blur, subtle depth of field, lighting or all of the above. A good example is when you get entangled by the medusa, when you glide with the icarus wings, or when you squeeze through cracks in walls. For some reason those sequences almost looks 3D. The vast majority of games look like a flat image, to me. A lot of the time when you're running around and fighting , that's also true of this game, but at times you feel like you're looking into the picture. It's really a nice effect.

I think I've worn thin on the God of War combat. I'm enjoying playing through, just to see what the next set piece looks like, but I'm not finding the combat particularly exhilarating anymore. It's not bad. I'm still having fun. I'm just not getting really excited when I'm playing.

Well, the worst voice in the game is Kratos. I just think Kratos all-around sucks, in every possible way. He looks stupid, he acts stupid, the voice actor isn't great, and his voice is stupid.

The guy has a goatee, tribal tattoos and doesn't wear pants. He's also roided like a freak. Basically if you combine an mma fighter, a hippy and He-Man, you end up with Kratos.

Grrr, my copy will be here Thursday, but even then I'm forcing myself to wait until my basement is finished and I can setup my home theater down there. Right now I have my 55" sitting in my dining room with no surround sound.
I'll be tempted to at least try the first few minutes, but then I'll really want to finish it.

You're just being homophobic, true beauty is totally wasted on you.
;)

I am not gay, I am not homophobic, I dont think there is anything gay about Kratos (not that gay are always noticeable), but damn I think this is the way Kratos should be. A mindless barbarian with an attitude

Well I got God of War collections today as I have honestly never played GoW even though I have owned a PS2 since GT3 was bundled with it.

I had a hell of a time trying to find an NON-reserved copy of God of War 3 and almost no chance in hell in finding the Ultimate edition.

Best Buy in Salem NH had like 15 Ultimates and all were taken (they were also sold out on PS3s scary huh?), next to several stacks regular copies all reserved, I went to a minor, no name video game shop and all copies were reserved, called another store and same deal, maybe walmart might give me better luck but after all the searching I did all day I just yelled a big doh! for not reserving myself a copy... what was I thinking?

Anyways I don't usually like to read reviews but most of them seem very positive I am wondering though if this title will be significant in the long run but it is crazy because there are so many other games out there even specifically for PS3 being released this month alone.

I do however have an opinion on the voice acting, at first I was not so thrilled but later it grew on me, I love the arrogance and vengance filled comments and taunts.

"what chu gonna do Fathar"

Haha!
Hey maybe all this anger, this vengeance is because... you know... must be difficult to come to terms with it if you're a god of war with blades chained to your arms

I thought it was the platforming sections. Such isn't worthy of War. :p
