Gamestop and associated stores not getting enough PS3 inventory

A friend who works part-time for one of the biggest EB stores in my region just told me this tonight. They postponed his preorder that of another employee and about 4-6 customers. The store is only getting 10 on day one(they got 120 DS's and 80 Xbox 360's). They say that there will be another shipment in a week but Microsoft said the same thing last year and it took forever to satisfy the pre-order demand. Nintendo said the same thing about the DS. The good thing about the limited pre-orders is that it will be first come first serve this year when the units come in...or is that a bad thing?

I'll probably get cut. My store took 8 preorders yet my reciept shows me 9th..hmmm. No big deal I was ebaying it anyway to fund some of the 360 titles this season. I was thinking about keeping it because Resistance looks good and maybe the possibilty of a superior madden07.

Also to be honest launch consoles these days scare the crap out of me. I've seen too many launch ps2, xbox, and 360s die on my friends and me.

And thus, my earlier predictions from the original pre-order thread come to pass.

I sincerely hope PS3 hardware isn't as defect-ridden as XB360 HW. Go read the official XBOX360 forums to see the true horror. Personally, I'm on my 3rd XBOX360. My first one manufactured in begining of January, died shortly after playing Dead Rising. 3 red LEDs of death. If I power it off, and boot it up 10 minutes later, it will run about 5 minutes, then die, and this is with complete ventilation (outside and sitting on floor). MS sent me a replacement, the replacement died after 2 weeks, similar issue, only this time not related to how long it's been running. Just 100% dead.

Given all the rumors surrounding CELL yields, plus the "all in one" case with no external power brick, including internal HDs, I'm very wary of the stability of the PS3.

Well so far its all good, usually you have units dying on you already in launch but no reports have surfaced from Japan. In a month or so if there's no problems, I'll honestly be surprised!

Well i guess it will be as defect-ridden as PS2 at launch... People complained, there were quite a few broken ones, but the vast majority was fine. I still have mine working fine from launch.

I expect most issues to come from the Bluray drive. THAT is going to cause some issues cause it's just too new, unproven, and cheaple made.

as far as i can tell from friends that i know who have problems with xbox360 , most of them are pre MAY consoles. it looks like they fixed some issieus.

that means maybe they have your box already somehwere in the inventory room. why dont you sneak in and ask if you can get it already. some store workers dont know sh*t about launchdates .. :devilish:

btw, whit the looks of it, i think europe can forget about MARCH or in the best case they will paper launch (ala japan) in europe

With the difference that most probably they will not get new ones on weekly basis ala Japan...

This whole thing happens every system launch at EB or GS. It's more because of DM's trying to show good numbers by telling "Game Advisors" to keep on taking pre-orders even though they are well aware of the shortages. That's why you make sure that they are doing the pre-order on the first shipments or the later shipments...

Best Buy is trying a nice trick - they are offering a 360 bundle with two games for those whose PS3 pre-orders they can't fill on day one.

They actually tried to avoid that this time by taking a strict limit of 16 (at my store). Even then, they wont make it :\

According to gamespy, the missing consoles from the US launch are going back to Japan:

GameStop PS3 Shortage Update
Only sixty percent of pre-orders for Sony's new system will be fulfilled at launch nationwide.
By GameSpy Staff | Nov. 13, 2006

The PlayStation 3 US launch is starting to look even messier than before. We've just been informed by a GameStop representative that they will only be receiving enough PS3 units to fulfill sixty percent of the pre-orders they sold last month. As we reported earlier today, GameStop and its EB Games retail outlets will be receiving fewer PS3s than expected because an undisclosed number of PS3s originally slated to go to the US are being redirected to Japan due to the high demand there..................

It's a bundle of buy a 360 and 2 games, and get a 3rd game for free.

And Best Buy doesn't do preorders.

Good lord, I just squeezed the info out of the guy..Were getting 8, 6 of them are 60GB and 2 of them are 20GB. So if that employee who reserved first gets one, im screwed. They are checking the list and calling people in a few hours D:

This makes no sense. If 40% of their allocations got cut and Japan only got 88,000 units, that sounds disasterous for total units available. You can be sure other chains got a supply cut also. It's just that EB games did pre orders so we knew how many units they were suppose to get.

Had Japan received 150-200K units it'd be a different situation but going from a theoretical 80k > 88K and cutting such a large chains inventory by 40%...something is up.
