Game music

oi

Regular
So I accidentally stumbled upon this pretty cool album supposedly done by Nobou Uematsu and some of his buddies, The Black Mages. It's a rock rearrangement of various Final Fantasy songs played with real instruments. So since I'm currently pretty bored with my music collection, does anyone know of any good similar projects?

Bjorn Lynne is a very good musician spanning many genres. He started in the Amiga mod days and, working through Team17 as chief audio engineer including soundtracks from Superfrog and Worms, he's just this year setting up as a free-lancer.

He's written his own albums, not game scores, in very diverse styles. His trilogy is superb in mine and many other's opinion, including one CD being the only album to ever receive a 10/10 from some German magazine.

Highly recommend you look him up at http://www.lynnemusic.com/ where there's access to quite a number of free mp3's to evaluate and enjoy.

Would VG Mix or OC Remix count, for you? Many of the remixes feature real instrumentation, often supplemented by synthesized drums/etc.

I highly suggest Virt's work, among other quality remix'ers..

Are you specifically asking about old or electronic music recorded with real instruments? Or just game soundtracks with real instruments in general?

The halo2 ost, those 4 incubus songs are pretty bad ass. Rest of the cd is pretty good if you're in the mood for its style of music.

I'm pretty much asking for anything worth listening to :) But yeah, originally I had game music remade with real instruments in mind.

Hmm... well, I've heard these are good (or I can vouch for them myself):

* Fable
* Halo 2
* Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
* Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3
* Myst IV
* Jade Empire
* Dungeon Siege
* Morrowind

I like a lot of Jeremy Soule's work. He kinda reminds me of John Williams in that there doesn't seem to be a great deal of variation in his music, but I don't mind because it's so good.

And my following of Jade Empire has set me on Jack Wall's scent. I have not heard Myst IV's music myself, but it has garnered plenty of nominations for awards. And the pieces of music I have heard for Jade Empire are fabulous.

I found this place which might interest you.

Panzer Dragoon series music
Shenmue Orchestral
Dark Savior
Dragon Force
Dark Wizard
Lunar SEGA CD series
Chrono series

O'll Lucasarts adventure games music. :D Those were the days. :cry:

Where 'Japanese anime-like game style' music goes, Yasunori Mitsuda's Chrono Cross OST is the pinnacle of achievement. He has not been able to repeat the same success in his creative career up till today.

I like the FFVII soundtrack, particularly the song "One Winged Angel" when you fight Sephiroth at the end, so much so I decided to buy the soundtrack on amazon a few years ago.

I've like a lot of Square game soundtracks as well, including Chrono Cross, FFVIII etc.

I wouldnt mind getting some of the Metal Gear, Silent Hill and Resident Evil soundtracks either.

I enjoy game music and related stuff. Here's some things I'd recommend:

-Silent Hill series. Akira Yamaoka is the man. 2 > 3 > 4 >1, is what I think, as far as music.
-Genso Suikoden, arranged music in Celtic style, of course from the game series.
-Nobuo Uematsu's Phantasmagoria.
-Ecco the Dolphin soundtrack. Very underrated, the composer is the best Western game composer out there IMO.
-Elemental Gearbolt. Symphonic score, quality stuff.

Not a lot of good Western game music out there IMO. Jeremy Soule is ok but I wouldn't say any of his soundtracks are really "great".

Well...

C64 music is very popular for both remixing and covering.

There are a couple of bands who do C64 tracks such as "Press Play on Tape" and "Machinae Supremacy".

There's even a Swedish Acapella group called Visa Roster (except with some accented characters I can't type) who occasionally cover C64 stuff entirely vocally. No, seriously... and one of the guys in it is Mahoney, from Mahoney and Cactus...

These groups show up live at old-school industry get togethers like "Back in Time Live", together with aging industry "celebrities" forming their own bands... last year's effort was pretty entertaining.

Oh dear. I expect I have now lost all remaining credibility.

This thread made me buy the shenmue soundtrack from ebay... even though I own the DC versions of shenmue 1 and 2.
