Firmware 2.41 available... *

So far i havent seen any real bricking reported on this update, if you can format the harddrive and bring the PS3 back it would a stretch to call it a brick.

I think any situation in which all of your data is lost is a serious one. If it happened to me, I certainly wouldn't be very pleased, I'll say that much. But it doesn't even have to happen to me at all for me to say that this is probably the worst-executed of all their firmware updates to date (in terms of dangerous side-effects), and as such, I don't see how it can earn the "extremely good" QC honor.

Now I'm not saying in the aggregate it's a big deal, because truthfully the effects overall aren't all that dramatic. But saying it's not that bad and actually praising it IMO are two entirely different ideas.

I agree 100% that losing saved games etc sux. But who would call a PS3 with a faulty harddrive a brick?

I seem to recall one previous withdrawal of a (Sony) FW update. But it wasn't this serious. Anyone know what I'm referring to?

The most worrying thing here is that going forwards, problems with consoles are likely to increase. As the complexity is piled on, the updates are going to affect more and more systems, leading to goodness knows what complications. Anyone who's worked in software is likely to have experienced totally unexpected, hard to track down bugs. If you don't have hardware that reproduces it, finding the fault is a hideous nightmare. I can see both sides to this, both the frustration as a user that simple tech is giving me headaches, and the developer's side who is dealing with such a hugely complex system.

We have the same thing with TVs and firmwares. It's just a sad truth that in the future, technology is going to give us more headaches to go with the added features. :(

multiple sku's certainly aren't helping.

terrible QC on sonys part, its a wonder that they can let such a thing slip through, after all consoles only have limited customability + theres not much variation in hardware + perpherials

On the contrary, I think they are paying the price of hardware variety, if you look at previous software problems too, like the case of GTA4.

That said, I think they are doing pretty good job of kicking new stuff in reserved resources, as well as shrinking those at the same time.

I also believe Sixaxis dropouts are hardware issue first, software issue second.

How do you backup the HDD and then restore it?

Are these built-in utilities?

Back up the data to where, an external USB drive? Any FAT32 USB2 drive?

yes, yes and yes.

There is an XMB menu item tittled Backup Utility or something like that.

I think that with the rush of people downloading - there were errors in downloading the update - people got impatient and they didn't get the full update...try to install it and you are going to f up your system. Def a problem in installing the update, rather than the use of the update itself.

PS. it's up again. *edit* Apparently false alarm

How can you force a firmware update on the PS3 before it is finished downloading?

OK. It was to do with corrupt downloading, rather than a problem within the firmware itself.

A corrupted download shouldn't even install I would think. It would most likely return an error message after it searches for, then prepares to install.
My understanding is these errors occur after instal is complete.

Okay, that actually sounds better. When it's up, we should see an announcement and concise explantation rather than a stealth return.

The bad thing about 2.4 (if you installed successfully) is (i) The deluge of XMB messages from friends boasting about their trophieeeeeeees and [Yes, deepbrown including you :p], and (ii) People asking you why you are still at Level 1.

Guys, I have enough target settings to worry about at work. A gamer score or level system is not going to entertain me as much. Gimme something more entertaining and relaxing.

Is there any word on games that have trophies yet?

I kept my Uncharted save despite me selling the game just because it was supposed to be integrated with the new trophy system, but I've still got none showing up.

There will be a patch coming for Unchartered that will add Thropies

Your excuses do not convince me. :D
