Final confirmed Jan NPD's

Which is all basically common knowledge around here. Todd, when things are provided without links they are usually because everyone knows what is being discussed.

Before flying off the handle at people, why not run a search?? This forum follows the market very closely, and we've all had langthy debates about Sony's shipped targets, the feasibility of those targets etc etc etc, months ago.

Asking for a link to these targets, when they have been discussed to death around here, just pulls everything offtopc, and if you ran a search you could probably easily find what we're referring too.

Thanks for the links. I forgot why this was important now ;)

So the first one from June 2006 says they were planning to produce 1 million/month, we know that was wrong now. From the second link it sounds like they finally reached that production in December. The original 6 million number included Europe launch in Nov before production problems, why didn't they just revise it? As for sales, I think most of us expect 2-3 million world wide.

PS3's jan #s means very little. Until supply issues are resolved, true demand of the ps3 can not be ascertained. NPD number for the holidays + january are still below the 1 million that Sony claimed was shipped to the US. There has been no further infomation regarding additional shipments. 244K is more likely a result of Sony building up inventory for the PAL launch.

This comment is very contradictory you know. If the sales in the US are well below the 1 million consoles Sony claimed to have shipped to the US, how is it that true demand cannot be ascertained?

By your own admission, PS3 is not supply constrained right now.

Todd - the second link is from December of last year re-establishing their goal of 6 million by March which was stated previously in this very thread in response to you.

I was asking for links to clear up the use of the numbers, not because I could not find them. As you can see, ChefO is using terms like produced, shipped and sold interchangeably, not to mention some of the numbers are over six months old and not relevant now. So please hold your buddies to the same standard you hold me.

I understand that and did not contest it. It's a bit hard to locate some of this info, it was stated originally in March 2006. You didn't even know it was re-established lately, Carl provided the link, so common knowledge isn't so common sometimes.

There was also a recent interview were a Sony PR person stated they were shipping 100k per week to the US. It was in response to a question in the difference between the availability of the PS3 vs the Wii... he/she blamed the difference on Nintendo's supposed poorer distribution/lessor shipment. As we can see from the NPD numbers, he/she was wrong.

Thread officially derailed... :devilish:

I'm sorry but I don't have the time to keep up, I'll go to sleep instead.

Hey I'm back on track waiting for a link to the 100k/week from Sony.

Natoma - Interesting Attach Numbers! xb360#s would be good to contrast. I think the previous theory of HDTV owners buying an unusually high amount of games on 360 just to have HD content should be toning their Attach #s back to earth.

Indeed. That means that on top of Wii Sports pack in, they're buying a lot of games. Given the sales #s we know of thus far, I think it's safe to assume that one of those games is Zelda Twilight Princess.

What the other ~1.6 games are is anyone's guess. :)

As for Sony, the same can be said for Resistance Fall of Man. Dunno what the other ~1.2 games are though.

Rayman and Red Steel have been doing quite well at launch, IIRC, and Wario Ware seems to enjoy good sales. Wii Play should probably be a big hit next month, if only for the extra controller (I bought it for that reason, and some of the included mini-games are actually quite fun, especially in multiplayer).

The spin here from Sony faithfull is pretty funny, the numbers speak for themselves the PS3 will never catch the 360 at this rate. The Idea that the PS3 would be released and wipe the floor with MS and Nintendo is a distant fantasy and Sony will not sell 5 million consoles with no games like they thought.

I'm surprised at Resistance showing that much legs. Of course it would be nice to know that actual units sold, it may be much less than number 5.

You know, I didn't truly realize the context of the strength of the Wii's january #s until I read this article:

http://www.gamingbits.com/content/view/1714/2/

From Nintendo's announcement: "According to the independent NPD Group, Wii sold through 435,503 systems to customers in its January reporting period. By comparison, that's 70 percent higher than any other new video game system in its first January of availability during the last 10 years."
That's simply phenomenal.

Whoa! His pants are on fire. :)

That would mean that through the January NPD #s, Sony had shipped 1.5 Million consoles to the US; 1 million through christmas, 100k/week through 5 weeks of January. With ~950k sold, that's a lot of unsold consoles. It would also support the anecdotal evidence that there are PS3s on store shelves across the nation.
