This story is still very much alive actually.

According to 1UP there WAS an interview with reuters, and Wada DID comment on this issue, but the translation is "inacurate"

4 Days now and 1up has still not provided the "accurate" tranlation...

"UPDATE: We've just confirmed with Square Enix that Wada's comments in the Reuters report are apparently inaccurate. We'll have more on this soon."

Inaccurate does not mean non-existent.
