Far Cry 3 announced

It's a funny map, maybe it got inspired by xkcd's ones.
Here a pre-facebook one (Usenet as a lost continent  )

This game looks big!
"Community" maybe lets you join and chat, play side games such as hunting trips, maybe join people at a town to set up a multiplayer game that'd be fun.
I remember pre-steam counterstrike, a clan's server could serve as a poor man's chatroom with voice sometimes.

The little co-op island... I guess it's better than nothing?

Benchmarks!
http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Far-C...y-3-Test-Grafikkarten-CPU-Benchmarks-1036726/

The writer points out that DX10/10.1 cards will only run the game in DX9. Unexpected IMO, FC2 was even shown to perform somewhat better than DX9 at the same settings. Extra disappointing considering the DX11 API (from what I've read) is supposed to be able to provide BC for DX10/10.1 hw.

It was disabled in this test, but DX11 multithreaded rendering is supported. Apart from Civilization V, I think this is the only other game known to use it.

Looks like you're fine CPU wise as long as you have a quad core

That's called double pumping.

Brings a lovely memory from 15 years ago when I was an exchange student in the USA. It was during my first week with my host family and I got sick, but still felt OK when I went to sleep. I was sleeping on my back and woke up when my vomit landed back on my face and at that moment the other end started a massive outsourcing of some wonderful stuff, I ran to the bathroom while both exhausts were firing at a high rate. It was "somewhat" awkward moment when my host mother came downstairs and witnessed the masterpiece I was able to create down there. :)

Far Cry 2 may have been flawed, but it was still very interesting and I think people were partly too hung up with it being so different from 1 and partly put off with the two bad decisions (weapons crappy to start with, and the respawn outposts). Still thought it was very cool though.

Actually I would compare FC2 to STALKER and Red Faction Guerrilla. There's also a half-baked game called White Gold.... ;) FC2 was ambitious with some cool ideas but I can barely stand playing the end result.

Far Cry 1 is so different that I don't compare it to the sequel to be honest, although I can see people getting all hung up on that as so commonly happens. The sequel there is Crysis.

Anyway, I am looking forward to reading comments and seeing how the reviews stack up for FC3.

Well, thanks to Black Friday sale, I'll be getting it for free (with a 250 GB Samsung SSD). Doubt I would pay money for it otherwise considering how god awful Farcry 2 was.

Here's to hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Regards,
SB

Damn I would like an SSD and FC3 as well. Is the sale still on?

Not sure, it was one of the Newegg Black Friday deals. Samsung 840 (the TLC drive) for about 158 USD with a free copy of Farcry 3.

Just checked and it is still available.

You'll see the free copy of Far Cry 3 when you add it to your cart. And don't forget to add in the code to get the 12% off bringing it down to about 158 USD.

I'd normally be wary of the write cycles for TLC NAND, but since it'll be used for a game drive, I'm only concerned about read speed (not many writes each day). And the 840 has fantastic read speeds.

SB

Will get it for PC. I liked Far Cry 2 a lot, but got bored after a while...was fun for the hours it lastet. I wonder if Far Cry 3 is more dense with better story and more focus...but I'll preorder today.

Does FC3 have the map editor? If so, any changes/improvements? (e.g. more robust game mode editing).

Sounds like you can do some AI stuff now, but no MP at all with AI. Also only 4 game modes but no details on how much they can be tweaked.

I saw a benchmark for this, the other day. I'm totally looking forward to it, but have a feeling it's going to tear even the most powerful machines a new one. I'm talking i7's with 680's getting like 32 FPS.

Hopefully, some new drivers will be released prior to launch.
