Factor 5 and Rogue Squadron:RL3

What technical advances could Factor 5 have made since RS:RL2 on the GC. Other than the framerate what could be improved and what could be new. Is it possible they could show something that was thought to be not possible on the GC.

The first details will be in the new EGM.

I think it's entirely possible the game will use simillar technique that Halo 2 or Doom 3 is using (every object has normal maps + stencil shadows) I think GC has what it takes for it, especially when coded by such crazy guys as those in F5.

I'm sure they're going to pull of some stuff on GCN that may have been thought wasn't feasible in game. F5 are very good programmers and know how to get a lot of a console and take it to new levels. Then again, some would say F5 is very pompous or a certain somebody within the group. I'd like to see what the game is doing without the consistent boasting of said person on these features. I would love to see what they could do with the GCN with a game that has a little different twist to it compared to Star Wars. I'm sur the game is going to be a must have, but what would they be able to do if they tried on a shooter sort of like Panzer Dragoon Orta? I'm sure they would blow a few of us away who doubt them.

I dont care what they do technically. I'd like to see something fresh, love starwars, but the RS series is getting stale

Yep, I doubt I'll buy another Star Wars space shooter, I could barely get through RL. EGM also doesn't say the game is only for GC, or that Factor 5 is making it, so the game could be going to all the consoles.

Crispin from EGM said this on GA

The May issue of EGM--which should hit subscribers this week--will begin to answer your Q's

In a "what is factor5 working on" thread. And a few days later EGM is confirmed to have info about rogue squadron III being in the may issue.

Also, IGN has also said countless times that factor5's next projects were gamecube exclusive.

Lets not forget that rogue leader was a 10 month development project and based on some n64 codes. Factor5 will have 2 years of development for RSIII if they release the title this fall, god knows what they could be cooking. Maybe the divx and mapping fmvs to polygons will be a big part of the in-game visuals ?

Two interesting quotes from Julian himself

the Death Star explosion and the fire chasing the Millenium Falcon in the last level where all FMV mapped onto polygons. So naturally when we worked on our own codec this was one of the main features we wanted to achieve. Easy usability with other applications running at the same time - be it a menu system or even a game.

When asked about multiplayer, he responded that he hated split-screen, yet had no plans for multiplayer in Rogue Leader, but they were going to watch closely for Nintendo's online plans, and he said " IF we do a Rogue (Squadron) 3, it will be online

Should be interesting. EGM will be out around mid april, so its a matter of weeks before we see RSIII, assuming they have screenshots, but they'll likely do, just like RS2 blow out a few weeks before E3 2001

For those fearing that this will be "just another" RS game, EGM offered a couple of interesting bits: Going "light speed" through the forests of Endor, and "another" way of taking down AT-ATs.

The first one implies speeder bikes. As for the second, its easy to remember from the movie after Luke had been shot down in Hoth using a magnetic grappling hook to hook on to the underside of an AT-AT, slashing it open with his lightsaber and tossing a thermal detonator inside, which of course means the possibility of 1st or 3rd person action a la Jedi Knight.

Technically, I can't wait to see what they do. I think they are virtually unparalleled in that area.

Er... ppl claim this all the time but I've yet to see one shred of evidence. Anyway, it better not be an FPS. That's just about the only way they can ruin the game for me. I doubt that it is, though.

Yeah but the difference is Nintendo has the hardware to do it :p

thats not the point is it... and anyway, do they REALLY have the hardware for it? i'm sorry to say that the extensive use of bump mapping used even in the first Halo (let alone the secon one) still has to be reached by any other console... even the slowdowns tho

I thought the point is to make a better FPS game, not just a FPS that uses latest graphics technology :\ Why would a game have to have a massive bumpmapping and extensive lighting to be a better game?

I think F5 has the talent to do a Halo 2 quality FPS which is only possible if you have the hardware to begin with. I'm talking about graphics AND gameplay here. If MP ran at 30 fps instead of 60, it would be possible to add more effects to put it on a graphical level similar to Halo.

it's clear that the improvement over a Launch game will be pretty extensive.... unless they mess something up, but something tells me they won't....

u never know though, Capcom messed DMC2 up and Namco messed Tekken4 up so u never know......

All the technical kajings aside, in my opinion, MP still looks quite a bit better than Halo, which would fare much better if the majority of the game wasn't taking place in those boring looking interiors, and if the framerate was 60 and not sub-30. Besides, Halo would be just as good game if it was completely devoid of any bumpmapping. I just don't see why do you need to make something better looking (and in same style, mind you) to have a better game.

I suppose to be widely regarded as a Halo 2 beater you have to beat/match Halo 2 in most ways. You might have better gameplay. But if the games visuals don't match or beat Halo 2 (or at least come quite close) then not many people will consider the game a Halo 2 beater.
