Euro 2004 Portugal

I'm happy for the greeks. The best thing is that I'll be content regardless of who wins the finals, as I like both teams! ;)

Greeks bec'se their coach is german :D , portugal?? :?

I've just come back from Greece (Kos) and it was great watching the Greek team beat France there - almost made up for us (England) being denied by that f*@#ing Swiss ****! Be brilliant if they won on Sunday. The Greek people are really lovely folks and they'd go absolutely mental if they won

Again with that poor ref? I don't see a reason for the British supporters to complain about him: the goal scored by England in the very last minute of the match was completely irregular. If you say that in England such things are OK instead, it simply means that you've got pretty bad refs over there (which is a well known fact throughout the rest of Europe BTW).

The ref was poor the whole match, not just over that decision - he made bad decisions against both teams. The point of a referee is to keep the game flowing, not to make a name for themselves, as Meier obviously wanted to (why else did he die his hair and a grow a goatee for the match?) When he did disallow the goal he was a good 30 metres away and yet the linesman, who was nearer, never said anything. He even indicated it was disallowed for a push, not for any arm on the keeper, then changed his mind after the match. Football is a physical game and there is always going to be players jumping into each other when they go for the ball, but the fact was that the keeper was no where near getting the ball regardless of whether Terry impeded him. Turns the game into a lottery.

I already posted the excerpt from the official rules somewhere in this or the other euro thread, it's forbidden to shove/impair the goalee in their movement inside the goal area. it's a clear rule, it wasn't followed by the english team.
But the ref had a goatee and dyed his hair, had to be evil

There are loads of official rules but the point of a referee is to interpret them using common sense, not just by sticking to the exact letter of the law. Players will always jump when there's a cross into the box, especially on a corner, and often attackers will touch the keeper. If every goal was disallowed when this happened then there'd be very few goals and the game would be extremely dull. FIFA/UEFA are getting silly in their rules - like, from yesterday, it's now an automatic yellow card offence for a player to celebrate a goal by pulling their shirt over their head. How long before someone misses an important final because of this rule? Let refs interpret rules, not impose them.

Well, point is the rule is there, and ref's are not allowed to interpret it... The shirt rule has been criticised, and by ref's too, but it's a strict instruction from th UEFA to their ref's, so, they have to follow it or they will not be referee at the next big game...
The goal area rule is in place for years and years, and is handled that way for years. Just because premier league handles it differently doesn't mean the rest of europe is going to cater your wishes...

I thought we'd established that no such rule exists. ;)

The referee was entitled to give a free-kick under the obstruction rule so I assume this is what he gave it for. I thought it a poor decision, but we were crap for most of the game and didn't really deserve to win.

Portugal are certainly the only team who have being improving throughout the tournament but I have been impressed by the Greek work ethic and tough defending. Ultimately though, with only a couple of days rest until the Final, I can see the Greeks being too tired to keep their game up. The extra day's rest for Portugal could prove vital.

All this hassle Meier has received from the British tabloids is just to be expected really - journalism is not a word that The Sun has much truck with! :)

One thing which is ridiculous is the ludicrous rule by Blatter that international referees must retire at the age of 45! This means that Collina - widely recognised as the best referee in the world, has now refereed his last international match. I mean, bloody hell, the late, great, Stanley Matthews was playing professional football until he was 52!

Greeks because they're the underdogs and yeah, because of their german coach. Portugal because I like their football philosophy, players and they've been a great host (plus I've got a Portugal T-Shirt)... :D

Portugal!!!Portugal!!!Portugal!!! :D

Greece is a good team and they beat us in the first game. I hope Portugal can score the first goal. If the greeks score first, it will be very dificult to win the game.

Wow. Every match since the quarter finals I thought the Greeks couldn't pull it off another time, yet they did it again and actually gpt better with every match. Congratulations, the deserved champion is Greece! :D

Congratulations to Portugal too, they played a good tournament and reaching the finals is the biggest success in their football history, so don't be too sad!

Congratulations to Greece!

They dont play the type of football that brings fans to the stadiums but are very practical and extremely strong in defence.

Personally, i'm proud of our team and the enjoyed our football. It was a great championship, full of surprises where most of the teams with more reputation produced dissapointing performances.

Well done Greece! They are really nice people so I'm glad they get the chance to enjoy themselves at last. Commiserations to Portugal (though tell Deco to stop diving!)

Unbelievable... For years our german teams torture their fans with minimalistic football, now we finally deservedly lose early in the tournament, and now our franchise in greece wins the EURO
The bad thing is that we'll probably get Rehakles as next trainer for the german team, and continue playing boring football for years

;)

Aside from those bleak expectations, congratulations to the greek team, they played efficiently, and, as Rehagel said, "modern tactics is when you win"...
