Engines for Multi-platform development !

Frostbite will not be licensed to any non-EA group. DICE was very clear about that recently. They said Frostbite will be used for EA games, and have an edge over the competition.

(it seens today JC have more knowledge betwen two console archtectures)

Indeed. I don't think I've heard any other developer say that the PS3 is potentially more powerful CPU than the 360 but that it's harder to develop for, but that the 360 is an equally competent console overall.

Clearly JC has more knowledge than anyone of the different architectures to make such a statement.

:???: really? I heard from years this quote.... maybe you mean the general hardware...

It's too much of a vague or general term to just say the hardware overall is more powerful.

We're 6 years into this generation, anyone inquiring about which system is more powerful at this point is just looking to satisfy their biased desires.

It isn't vague. In terms of calcolus what said Carmak it's pretty know from years... it just said something of obvious; but maybe it has found a real way to use that claimed 'raw' power from him even sometimes ago (he talking of deeper debug which allows to unleash more performances, I guess...). We know how massive are the problems of ps3 (older & bottleneck gpu, 'infernal' coding etc etc).

Why are you responsding to assurdam as if he was making an assertion, when he was asking what Carmak meant and why Rotmm thought news that PS3's CPU was more powerful was something new?

Oh I see now, sorry, misread the comment.

The second part of my comment was really directed towards the article and the audience it's meant to attract, but I can see how that wasn't clear.

I want to remember Carmack is the same who said past week 360 is better of ps3...I don't understood why to criticize so much about the 'probable' audience of the article or others aspects imho... he is everything except a 'fanboy' when talking of something...

It was a part of the same interview:

"Now the PS3 in particular, and this has been passed over many times over the years, but the core architectural decisions of having the cell processors versus additional symmetric processors makes life more difficult, unquestionably it’s harder to develop for those there. You have to use a separate tool chain, the debugging is crappier, and all this. The upside of that is, there is more raw performance for computing there than there is on 360.

The PS3 is still far and away better than anything else that’s ever been made... except maybe the 360. It’s a great time to be a developer. It’s not like working with the Sega Saturn of the PS2, where these are really kind of quirky, cranky, architectures that are not, well, architected, I would say."

Nowgamer put second part of the quote in news some time ago (before they posted full interview)

Perfect flamebait ;)

My comment wasn't referring to or directed to anyone here, I was just saying that articles like that are posted to attract hits. I post a lot at work and don't always double check my posts, so some of my points may not be too clear, sorry about that.

My point is it's flamebait material and it's silly this far in the generation IMO.

I know that what carmack says is credible.
But the journalistic branch of the game industry miss quote or put them out of context all the time to meet click goal every month.

And saying one console is better then the other while not getting those result will give you some major kick in the nuts when said games does not perform better on said console.

Now carmack shows us Doom4 that will be the game to look forward to i think.

It's pretty hilarious; weeks ago the major site report only the quote: ' ps3 is better of everything than the 360'; lately, the opposite in evidence, but in reality in the same quote, Carmak gives compliments of both without blame no one  ah the internet crow...

Wasn't it Carmack who said consoles due to being closed box performs 3x vs PC HW of same perfomance class?

If so come at me becouse 3x faster PC HW ****s consoles in Crysis 2 in every vent-hole and PC HW is being underutilised (DX9).

PR business.

What's worse now is that he has been saying the exact same thing every year since, what, 2008? Which seems to confirm to me that he really doesn't care much about this topic at all.

I think Carmack said you can get about twice as much out of a closed platform than the PC. That would, presumably, be down to a number of factors such as APIs, lower level access, and more optimised engines. I don't think it's intended to be a precise figure either.

Clearly, there's nothing in the PC space on 90nm that's matching the 360, and have you seen how badly the GeForce 7 has aged? Both the 360 and PS3 f**k the 7900 GTX up both sides of it's large ducted heatsink!

Edit: And the first time I recall the JC saying something like this (a lot more / double from a closed platform) was during the PS2 / Xbox 1 era so it has nothing to do with Rage PR.

It does sound like he was being figurative. Id hasn't actually developed a console game since Doom 3 in 2004 for xbox 1, I think I remember hearing that they actually began development on the console port before the xbox was even released. They've also been working on Rage since about 2007 so I guess they have more time than most other companies to learn the hardware.
