EA next gen teaser (two pics & some talk)

do u have some r500 performance numbers to share with us then?

Using a regression analysis points to a chip (R520) with about 1.5 times the performance of the X850 (this analysis uses Doom 3 and the 9700, 9800, X800 and X850 as a test bed). I don't think this would be enough.

Haven't people on this very board said the R600 would be the desktop part for the R500 in Xenon?

I have heard this before and to me this doesn't make any sense. BUT if it is true then I will have to say that the R500 could very well have the performance needed. But I don't think this is the case.

As for the upfront cost of these chips...well that's a low priority. What is important is the production costs a year or 2 after the launch. These chips in 2 years become very profitable.

I don't think microsoft will be using final or even close to final hardware at the CES. They will estimate it as they did in 2001 or when Sony had those multiple box simulating the PS2 in 1999.

Exciting times ahead!!

I keep hearing the r500 is superior in a number of ways to the r520, don't let the numbering fool you.

Back on topic... I think the Madden pic is pretty dead on.. the NFS one looks pretty good too though I think they picked just a bit of a low bar, than again it's only one picture..

yeah, 3$ to 1 euro can't come soon enough ;)

might not happen . We might start gaining back soon .

errrrrrrrr... still going down.... :devilish: at least against the UK£
Right now yes , but not going out in the next year. the dollar will start gaining again . Alot of industrys are bouncing back here in the states , but this is ot

That is your problem. Your using an unoptimized engine for the comparison and you have no clue about the rxxx tech.

THe r520 is based on the r420 , current speculation is that its a sm3.0 part with fp32 strait through and 24 pipelines clock around 600-700 mhz on 90nm process .

The r500 is based off the r400. Which is completely diffrent than the r420 .

The r400 was supposed to come out a few months before the r420 and the r420 was never supposed to be . But ati felt they were pushing things to hard and the process tech wouldn't be there. So they moved it to the back burner .

So while the r420 and r520 are modified r300s which is not over 2 years old. The r500 is new tech , with new ideas .

The jump from the r420 or the r520 to the r500 could actually be as big as the jump from the r200 to the r300. Which was huge about 3 x the performance . When you take into account the sdram that is supposed to be on chip

Only way the dollar regains a lot is if interest rates here relative to other nations go up. That would hurt the economy and you can forget about new consoles or high-def movie players selling well.

Or if the rest of the world economy tanks so bad that foreigners pour money into dollar-based investments. But that would also mean our exports would be hurt, which hurts the trade deficit, which works against the dollar.

BTW, nobody will have a big advantage in pricing because of these currency foes. The Xenon will be made in the Far East so MS will have to deal with currency hedging just like Sony and Nintendo.

jvd...some good points! But I think I'm right about the expected R520 chip performance...1.5 time X850. So...I wonder if ArtX is the team behind the R500......completely new technology...good stuff.

1.5 times the performance may be what you will see . Doom3 isn't a great example as it breaks the ati hardware (From last i read) . The ram wont be there in 6 months or 7 months when the r520 is there to drive the performance up. But its shaders will be faster that that speed diffrence .

THe r500 has almost nothing to do with the r3x0 , r42x and r52x . I'm sure the good ideas from that line wil lbe in the r500 but also new ideas and ways to do things .

What will "they" replace smoke effects with?

Still high-res 2D sprites?

If the smoke looks and behaves realistically without major performance issues, then I don't think it really matters what implementation "they" will use.
