E3 Impressions

Personally I think you should go with the one that has the games you want to play on it.

That's the thing though.. I don't know what will be on it in two/three/four/five years time. I do know that working on what's happened in the past, the best games will be on the biggest seller. So as an early adopter I can either (a) buy everything, (b) guess which will be the biggest seller, or (c) wait until later in the lifecycle and make my choice.

My point which I think didn't come across so well was that I don't want to buy a system knowing the promotional material used as "expected performance" was never going to be reached in order to artificially boost sales. But I feel that will leave me on a system will lower-quality games! I'm really miffed at the moment with a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" feeling.

I think I take these things too personally  As a Dreamcast and XBox owner, I can say both systems proved their value (before the XBox died, anyway >:[ ) and any current-gen system would have made their respective owners happy. I know it's all about the games, but I think the more "informed" I become, the less happy with the choice I'll make will be.

Aye, predicting that far ahead is rough. Which is why I haven't gotten a PSP or DS yet - because I'm going to wait for a killer AP (or at least one) to debut. By the time I buy a console or two (in whatever the current generation is), usually the price has dropped and the amount of decent software is sufficiently adequate.

After that initial killer AP though, it's much tougher to gauge what the future will bring. Good luck to you. :)

Well I was reasonably pretty fired up to go to E3, however after not being able to get into the Sony conference and my boss giving me shit and work to do I lost a lot of enthusiasm (although in hindsight, considering who got in and who didn't at the Sony press conference, I'm less dejected about that).

In any case, I ended up being chauffer ;) for a bunch of Axis folk, and picked their heads for impressions and more interesting behind the closed doors stuff...

although Daxter looked interesting I note they've farmed this out

That is not quite true. Ready at Dawn the developers of Daxter is made up of a breakaway group of coders and artists from Naughty Dog including Didier Malenfant. The Technical Director Andrea Pessino comes from Blizzard.

Think of them as a satellite studio.

Ah, ok... well to me the direction they've taken with the game is more interesting than ND went with Jak II and III... so I'll have to keep an eye on RaD.

My first impression was that Microsoft messed up badly and Sony stole the show. However, after some consideration I'm coming more to the conclusion that Microsoft/Xbox360 can only get better from this point on whereas Sony/PS3 have built themselves up for a big fall if, once again, they fail to live up to the promises and hype of their demos. I somehow really, really doubt we're going to see 'killzone 2' like graphics on the PS3 and I wonder how the Sony fan-base will take this?
I'm cautious as the next guy at not being overly optimistic about the footage we say on PS3 unveiling (even though I really don't think Killzone looked particularily more impressive than the confirmed realtime footage of Heavenly Sword for example) but it's worth repeating that despite what people think of PS2, visuals in it's top games have definitely matched or outclassed pretty much every tech demo they showed at the unveiling.

You are exactly correct. And to think marconelly if the PS2 was as easy to program for as the PS3 is looking to be then more games probably would have looked like God of War or Tekken 5. And to add people at E3 stated that Soul Caliber 3 looks better than Tekken 5.
