Dragon's Dogma 2 [PS5, XBSX|S, PC] - The same old DD you know and love, with more spice

No way in hell I'd pay $70 for this trash. Aside from abysmal performance many are seemingly unable to play it at all because of crashing. Game looks interesting though so I'll pick it up if they fix it.

It does look like the PC version is just not optimised very well. On console I've not really noticed anything, except maybe a little sluggishness when a cyclops invaded the main town and all hell broke out.

Feel sorry for those who experience crashing or are overly sensitive to frame rates. The game's been stable for me and the fps is not that bothersome.

I'm really not sure what the threshold is on performance is but anyone with a reasonable powerful PC should give it a go.

I'd rather a dev made something novel and janky than boring with rock solid fps (in general)

I suspect the PC version would be fine too if you were to lock it at 30fps, but I don't want to play it like that.

The way NPCs pop in right in front of you is also not something I'm interested in. Or the crashing. I saw a streamer attempt to play it and it wouldn't work at all no matter what he did. This does not seem to be an uncommon experience though admittedly I don't know how much faith I have in Steam reviews.

I'm gonna wait this one out.

I agree completely on this. But I'm still gonna wait until they fix it. There's no reason for me to play it now when I know it will be better if I wait a bit. It will also be cheaper too but I'd pay $70 if it weren't so fucked up.

My threshold for performance is basically 60fps. I don't feel like that's a huge ask.

Btw I still don't understand how I can have relatively smoother performance than other people.

Even in the city uh.. Velen? Valheim? The first city, I got 30-50fps @4k dlss auto RT on.

I did also get the "random" performance drops tho. That more than halved my fps

- in front of a cave
- after opening the map
- map cell/area/block switch
- new enemy / npc / sfx / anm / object that are dynamic / can move.

Rtx 3070, ryzen 5600

You are really lucky :)
On my older computer (5800X + 3080 Ti) it's mostly playable. I don't feel it impacting my gameplay (I play a thief, which should be more sensitive to frame rates), so while I think it's too low but I still can play it without much problem. Maybe it's just that we are now too used to much higher frame rates.
However, frame time inconsistency is a more serious problem, the "random performance drop" you mentioned. It's been discussed a bit in Digital Foundry's video, but the reason behind it seems to be elusive. This makes the game actually feel less smooth, even at higher frame rate.

Back to the game itself, I think this game is exactly what you put in the thread title. If I am to give out a really short review of this game, that'd be it :)

I wonder if HAGS is required to have smoother perf. I have it enabled.

Anyway, the clear downgrade compared to dd1 is the intro imo.

DD1 with the theme song, then with the boss battle as intro.... Amazing

It's usually on by default?

On Windows 11, navigate to Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change Default Graphics Settings and enable "Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling."

Thanks! Yes it's on on my computer too.

I can confirm the map one.
And opening / closing multiple times can fix it
What an oddity...
It's crazy this game has the worst performance i've seen in a long time...but the content, i played until 4am 'yesteday' and this didn't happened for a long while.

You can simply close the nap and wait for a few secs. No need to open/close map multiple times IME

I accidentally "finished" the game yesterday. :) I just have probably less than half of the map unlocked, so it's a bit surprising.
After the credit roll you can either do a 'new game+' or load from last inn rest (loading from last save goes directly to the end credit).
I decided to load from last inn rest because I still have a lot to explore. For example, I still have two vocations locked...

There seems to be another "real ending" but I'll keep playing ;)

Warning: once you did it the "correct" way there's no return. You can't even load your last save after that. This is not unlike certain quests in DD1, although in DD1 the game did warn you.

There's an update out today.

I think the most interesting part for me is the improvement on DLSS (there're some issues with for example moving grass when using DLSS).

Now I have finished the game, I'll share some of my thoughts here:

First, with all things considered, this is a great game. Its performance is bad, but it's actually pretty playable even with my old computer (though I'll admit it's not that old, only about three years). However, I haven't encountered any game breaking issues or progress blocking bugs. I had only one crash during the game and another crash after I quit the game, so for a game this size I think it's pretty good.

Gameplay wise, I like its combat, although I only played a few vocations and maxed only two of them. The combat is good that I don't care I have to kill more enemies, unlike in some games where facing a mob could be like a chore. Its combat is not like many other action RPGs so it could take some time to get used to. Thief is first vocation I played and it's probably the closest to many traditional action RPG games, with quick moves and dodges and whatnot. I also maxed mage and it can be slow but it actually is more strategic and you'll have to think beforehand instead of just spamming casting spells, because you can't move for a small time window when casting and that's when the enemy could attack you, so watching what the enemy is doing is quite important. Also there's almost no "telegraph" style indicator in game, though some spell effects are delayed (e.g. the enemy may drop a few lighting balls and they'll detonate after a few seconds, but they are not the popular "telegraph" indicators in many games). On the other hand, the comabt is not overly punishing. Even if you are knockdown to zero HP there's a small time window where you can eat something to avoid dying, and there are plenty of these health items in game. I also tried the trickster vocation for a bit but I didn't feel "clicked" with it.

About the quests, most of the quests are fine, although some of the hints in game can be a bit too subtle. I have to look up the internet on maybe two quests for help, so maybe it's fine. Overall I like the direction of how the quests are done, because I think one of the problems of today's games is that there are too many indicators and people are conditioned to just go to a yellow marker to get rewards without looking at what's actually happening, then complain that the game is full of "fetch this" or "kill that" quests. In this regard, Dragon's Dogma 2 actually does not have many side quests (not as many as some open world games), but these quests are also more interesting.

There are a few timed quests where you need to do them quickly or the outcome may change, but these quests are clearly marked with an hourglass so no need to worry about accidentally missed a timed quest because you are busy doing other things.

Also I think there probably should be a bit more "bread crumb" quests. Maybe it's just me, but during my playthrough in the first city, I only got one side quest pointing me to the second city. Therefore I completely missed another settlement. This could be intentional to encourage exploring, or maybe I just overlooked something.

Anyway I think I'll do a "new game+" and explore the game more. I think I probably only uncovered about 50% of the map or even less.

that sounds eerily like dragon's dogma 1
btw the title screen of dragons dogma 2 doesnt have the number 2 IIRC.

DD2 is more like DD1 reimagined, to me.

anyway, on the early main quest to go to the 1st city, it took me like 3 hours. because the game is too vague
- i look at the map, saw a route thru north
- north route blocked by a gate and the gatekeeper refused to let me thru

the cause?

turns out the knights escorting me need to be there too. they were too slow, they were left behind. i only found out the gatekeeper will open the door once i explored the map and then go back there feeling stuck after reading guides saying just go to the gate. i go there slow enough for the knights to not be left behind.

The title screen has a red "II" there but not very prominent.
And yes for quests involving a moving NPC (e.g. escorting quests) it's probably the best to follow or keep the NPC close. I have an escorting quest where the NPC died almost right after I took the quest (kill by a random mob). Have to revive him using a wakestone.

I just tried "New Game+" and it allows you to recreate your character and your main pawn, so you can change everything (including race and sex). Levels and items are maintained but items are sent to storage so you'll have to get to an inn to get them. Chest status seems to be reset too (previously opened chests can be opened again). Not sure about the seeker's token though.
And there seems to be a bug (or is it intentional?) that the entire map is now unlocked, so I don't know where I haven't been yet in my previous playthrough...

Forgot to mention that there is also a "New Game" option after today's update.
