Donnie Darko: Best modern Sci fi flick?

Hm. Now that I think about it: Escape from New York needs some lovin' too. Awesome music in that one as well, I have the title theme as a MIDI squirreled away on my harddrive. :)

12 Monkeys, Terminator (first part of course) take that title.
Screamers and Timecop are good also.
Donnie Darko is less about Sci-Fi, than being about god/free will, interesting film for sure tough.

All IMHO.

Haha. "Snake Plissken. I heard you were dead!" But then there's They Live, which is way more hilarious (Rowdy Roddy Piper!).

All in all, yeah, 12 Monkeys is both the best sci-fi movie of the past fifteen or twenty years and the reason I respect Brad Pitt, even if he made Troy.

Modern

The Terminator = 1984
Escape from New York = 1981.
Blade Runner = 1982

Must be a bunch of old farts in here if those are supposed to be modern. :) Can we at least compare DD to movies made this century?

nothing special about not having a clue what was going on really until the end when it all ties together nicely?

hardly any movies like that get large scale release in the US

(probably for the same reason i hear that asian (and i hear some EU) game developers purposefully 'dumb' down the difficulty of their games before offering them to us consumers)
No not really. It is easy to make such a movie.

And to be honest I wasn't really surprised at all by the way it worked out, I kind of had that inclination before hand. I did not find it tricky and hard to follow either. Of course I though pulp fiction was easy to follow as well yet lots of people efused about how hard it was to follow as well...

While Donnie Darko deserves all the credit in the world for being an excellent movie, "Alien" still stands in mind as the greatest Sci Fi flick, regardless of whether or not it's modern.

Donnie Darko is one of the best modern movies full stop in my opinion, never mind just sci fi. Its extremely clever and intricate (to clever for some it seems) with a great cast, script and musical score. Its definitely one of my favourite movies of all time and I can't wait to see what Richard Kelly comes out with next.
