I dunno, but is the reason games like MP and Z:WW only sold between 1-1.5 million that there's so much competition by other titles (perhaps from PS2 by people owning more than 1 console)? Because...it seems kind of weird IMO.

Egad! GC and XB getting smushed!

I dunno, but is the reason games like MP and Z:WW only sold between 1-1.5 million that there's so much competition by other titles (perhaps from PS2 by people owning more than 1 console)? Because...it seems kind of weird IMO.

The day people will understand that quality and sales are unrelated, we'll stop arguing about which console/game is better based on sales chart.

Thanks to Sizzem at the PS2GB (IGN) for the list (via Shrine of Data). It's not 100% in lock step with NPD (probably someone cobbling together spreadsheets), but it's reallll damn close and since NPD isn't completely perfect anyway, this does just fine

Frankly, I'm surprised Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast sold that few... If there was one game to make SURE to own, that one was it! I guess it stuck closely-enough to the fighting game crowd, though. Didn't get the "launch game" boost that TTT and DoA3 got, which were some of the few to sell notably more than it.

Also interesting to see nary a Street Fighter touching either list, despite its granddaddy status and "untouchability" play-wise from a lot of the afficionados.

Doesn't really matter how good a fighting game is/looks if one don't like fighting games. To be fair, they're rather narrow in scope, it's all just beat up one guy, then beat up the next guy, and the next, and then the chick with much too big boobs and her ass hanging out her suit, and then the end boss, and then it's all over yaayyy you get to do it again BUT AT A HIGHER DIFFICULTY LEVEL WHEEEEE!!!

That's why I never buy fighting games anymore.

Fighting games are for playing with your friends who also like those fighting games. RTSes are also "narrow in scope" in single player (by and large), but a ton of fun and possible variations available to you the moment you LAN them. (And now fighting games are similarly pushing into the online front, though likely won't be as capable there as RTS and other games for a good long time, due to network latency and the speed at which fighting games must be played at.) Other genres are similar, and always will be until AI becomes much more intelligent and non-predictable.

They are not designed for single-player, nor should they be limited by a single-player viewpoint. If that's all you bought them for... well, I'm surprised you ever got past the first few titles.

Btw, Namco and Sega had a deal that if Soul Calibur were to sell more than 1 million units, Namco would release Tekken Tag Tournament on Dreamcast. Namco broke the deal...

I'd like to see Sega Saturn sales numbers too.

Now this is something I never heard of before... When did it break the barrier? If it was at the end of Dreamcast's lifespan anyway, I can see why they wouldn't have bothered.

Madden at #4. In the previous generation, they hadn't cracked above 1.5 million.

As an annual game and you add up the versions for the other system, it's an astounding number.

For instance, GTA VC may have sold 6 million copies but it's been what, almost 2 years since GTA VC was released? EA claimed to have sold over 5 million copies of Madden 2004 and over 4 million copies of Madden 2003.

Guess longetivity counts for something.
