Mmm.. Shenmue II tomorrow. I hope it's as good as everybody says it is.. (based on the Euro-DC version)

I didn't know that Shenmue II came out tomorrow. I already own the DC version of course, but I haven't played it as I was waiting on the Xbox version.

Too bad I can't get it tomorrow. I mean, I could, but I already prepaid PSO and bought a broadband adapter, and I need to get my home theater system this weekend, so my gf would likely kill me if I tried to buy another game as well

LOL, poor Ozy. :) Shen Mue2X is worth making your GF to commit a homicide on you (j/k) Either way, I guess you'll be having a good gaming holiday. =) Me, I'll be happy with Ikaruga and two King of Fighter games for DC.

btw, Steel Battalion is Tekki, right?

Shenmue 2x, by all accounts, isn't worth dieing for. SEGA just isn't trying any more. The company deserves every bad thing that's happening to it.

While not as harsh as Angry Pants, I agree, Sega's really been slacking. Aside from Rez (which was actually a DC game) and VF4 (poor visuals), nothing much _originally exclusive_ has come out of the company worth mentioning for the three next gen systems. Even Shinobi's getting blasted by gaming mags.

I can understand that they want to regurgitate all their assets to put put the black back on their books, but still, its starting to wear thin.

Well,

Jet Set Radio Future and GUNVALKYRIE were amazing. Sega GT 2002 is the best playing racer ever made (but lacks tracks and should have had better graphics) and NFL 2K3 and NBA 2K3 are the best football and basketball games ever made. Even then, I agree that Sega is slacking. Only 5 AAA games in one year is pretty uncommon for Sega. :)

Shenmue II is a DC port. That means it will be subpar by Xbox standards (visually and control-wise), but it still looks like a solid sequel in the series. I'm still pretty excited about it.

Panzer Dragoon looks utterly amazing - ships in January.

Xbox wise...

JSRF had amazing visuals and style, but the gameplay bored me to death (I hate skating games).

GunVal was decent, I couldn't master the controls, but my friend did and said it was 'satisfying in the end, but not very long and pretty repetitive'.

Sega GT is a very fun game, but it needed to spread its cars out more and have more tracks (ie: by season 2 you already have the best car). Graphics are not up to par.

Shenmue 2 and PSO are pretty much regurgitations, as is Crazy Taxi 3 (shudder).

PDO looks good, but I've now realized with the Xbox, anything can be broken, no matter how promising!

PS2 wise...

VF4 is great, but the graphics are lacking. Chalk this one up to AM2 deadline to learn the PS2 and ship a game.

Rez is amazing, but its a DC regurgitation at a higher frame rate.

GunGrave and Shinobi appaer to ooze style, but both have gotten very poor reviews.

GC Wise...

Vomit vcmit vomit! Sonic Adventure 1, 2, and now Mega Collection? Ugh.

Atleast Super Monkey Ball is fresh, original, and (apparently) fun.

And I dont follow sports games, sooooo..!

But still, compared to their output on DC, their next gen stuff is looking rather poor. From that chart posted a while ago, it looked like the lions share of Sega's money came from VF4 and Sonic Adventure 2. I'm sure MS is waving dollar bills infront of the suits aswell.

Do you think there's a lot of infighting amongst the developers over platforms/ business decisions?

edit: added stuff

Original ? Its a good port of the Arcade Monkey Ball. It doesn't even have the Banana stick in the GC version.

Didn't Monkey Ball come out in 2001 in Japanese arcades? And then Super Monkey Ball soon thereafter?

Either way, the game is creative.. yet very very simplistic. This is where its strength lies.

Forgot Beach Spikers. Apparently this is good?

I know SMB was an arcade game, but this side of the pacific its new/fresh ;)

Beach Spikers is indeed a good game. Tough it's single player doesn't last very long. It took my less than 3 days (I wasn't playing all day) to unlock all the features and costumes.
But the multiplayer is very addictive. Because of it's intuitive controlls even people new to the game can pick it up and play at a decent level (that avoids that newbies are getting frustrated). The multiplayer is already a classic when playing with my friends. A small negative side note: It would have been cool if Sega had included more multiplayer modes. I'd have liked to see a multiplayer tournament mode, etc.

My score would be about 8.5/10.0, maybe just a tad higher.

Edit: Ups, BTW everyone forgot Sega Soccer Slam (GCN).

JSRF is not a skating game. It is a platformer with strong puzzle elements and wonky controls. That the characters happen to be on roller blades is completely coincidental as far as gameplay is concerned.

Give Sega some slack. You can't expect them to change their entire dedicated platform overnight. They've just survived another bankrupcy, so I expect them to pull themselves to "DC level quality/quantity output" sometime soon.

And, it's not new that many Sega games got crappy reviews. There quite a lot of bad reviews for many Sega games back in DC days too. I don't care about what Famitsu,EGM and GameSpot US think anyway. (At least GameSpot Japan have some decency)

It's funny that the series that opened the new envelope of next generation graphics (Shen Mue) is now considered dated...funny ;) Sure, X-box can do better than that, but so what, I've never seen any other games paying this much level of attention like Shen Mue series. (only Morrowind comes close) Oh, well, with those crappy reviews...sales will probably be abysmal and there won't be Shen Mue3 anymore. sigh...

They've been losing it for quite some time. I've heard quite a few impressions of this game now from people who have bought it and they're loving it.

Both Jeff and Greg are such spotty, inconsistent reviewers.

I wonder why noone said they've been 'loosing it' when they reviewed Getaway? Or War of the Monsters?

If someone doesn't have the same taste in games as you, it doesn't mean he's wrong. Live with it, it's quite simple really.

Besides, if they think the game is shallow, it *shocker!* just might be! What did anyone expected from this? A game of the year?

There's no need to get defensive Marconelly. :)

DoAX just got a 9.2 from IGN and it's scoring 8/10 + from most other sites/publications. Sounds like another Gamespot review bias again.

The Getaway by contrast was widely regarded everywhere as a 7.5/10 game.

I'm surprised too that DoAX turned out to be a better game than The Getaway, but that's life in the big city. I imagine The Getaway will still outsell DoAX by 7 to 1 anyway.

Granted, I haven't played the game at all, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Gamespot's review was spot-on. Not a single preview I've seen has given details of how the actual gameplay works, and if that isn't a warning sign after all this time, I don't know what is.

As for me, I got Beach Spikers for the Cube last November and from what I've read about DOA Volleyball so far, it was a good decision.
