Do you think Sega should re-enter the handheld race?

SH3707 must be some kind of MBX, but Renesas and Imagination Technologies will actually have to start talking about it in the first place... which would depend on the licensee's schedule.
GB Evolution? Is there a possibilty of Nintendo readying this solution for the next Game Boy in 2 years? By that time the technology would be easily cost efficient for a $99 handheld release...

I guess I heard the creator of GB Pocket, GBA, GBA SP, and now NDS, talking about GBA 2 at the end of 2002. ;)

I'll look up the name when I have the time, but he mentioned the choice Nintendo had to make: will the GBA2 be a games machine, or a multimedia machine. He also mentioned the fact that the performance of the machine will very much depend on the available battery technology.

I think Sega should NOT re-enter the handheld race. I simply can't afford 4 handhelds :)
Are you worries about the expense of the devices + games or of having to pay for pioneering surgery to graft on several new pairs of arms so you can play them all? :p

 Only arms won't cut it! It's 5 screens at the very least!

Sega shouldn't launch anything for at least a new generation . If they do anything they have to release a hardcore system to build up thier image.

What they really need to do is this .

Call up microsoft. Tell them hey Here is esp nfl 2k5 and world sieres 2k5 and the rest of thier sports line up . Pick one and take it as a pack in for the launch of the xenon .

Then they need to get a acarde perfect port of vf4 or better. Then they need to remake panzer dragoon saga and have all these launch the first year of the consoles life .

They need to port all thier dreamcast and genises games that sold well and are still loved to the nintendo ds and the sony psp .

They need to get back thier name and they need to drop the jokes . Once they do that and only after they do that can they launch a system .

Its sad that its at this point as sega has done alot for the console market. IN my opinion much more than sony has ever done

There is only one problem with VF4 and Panzer Dragoon Saga being on XBox 2, let alone XBox...

SEGA aimed VF4 for PS2 because of its ridiculously high installed user base in Japan and the US mainly because they were hoping to make a major profit like back in the Saturn days... I wonder how they did, if VF4 and VF4evo did well in terms of sales (I know I have VF4evo for PS2 and I am ashamed to admit it)

Then Panzer Dragoon Orta was made for XBox and the game even got a Limited Edition XBox in Japan, does anyone have sales figures for PDO. Specially with XBox having such a low user base in Japan I doubt that SEGA would, unless we send them emails and snail mails reaching over 500,000 to request that they reprogram PDS RPG for XBox or XBox2.

Does anyone have sales figures on PDO?

Panzer Dragoon Orta has probably sold around 200,000 to 300,000 worldwide. VF4 on PS2 probably moved about 1.2-1.5 million (Evo probably moved an additional 500-600k), VF2 on Saturn sold over 2 million (it sold 1.8M in Japan alone).

An affordable product launching in two years could use something much more powerful. Even at first release, SuperH and PowerVR cores are very small in size, so much of the cost reduction is already there at the outset. The launch of a system like that should come within a few months after its technology becomes available in volume production since, with coordination of the parties involved and test production, the release can be prepped concurrently with the R&D of the hardware.

Wait a minute is that your guess, are you estimating or is this factual sales numbers?

Cause damn if Panzer Dragoon Orta only sold at best 300,000 there is no way SEGA could justify even re-programing the original Panzer Dragoon Saga for XBox, maybe PS2. That would be sad indeed.

Thoses are, indeed, factual numbers, and it didn't even sold 300K copies, it's more around 250K and below than anything else... Yep, as you pointed out, it's sad news for this wonderful serie...

eeh wanst panzer orta just a shooter on rails with fucked up flying dinosours? what's so special about that or does it have some sentimental meanings for some sega fans?

It's a Sega game. That happens to be very pretty to look at. Isn't that enough? ;)

Flying dinosaurs > *everything*

Maybe not everything, monkeys with yellow shorts and spining lights on their heads are cool too, i must admit...

More seriously, Panzer Dragoon Orta is an awesome game, really.
It's indeed an on-rail shooter, but i don't think, or at least i didn't get the memo saying that from now on, on-rail shooters = crap. :p

Starfox64, Lylat War was also excellent, BTW! Sin and Punishment, was good too.
On-rail shooters can be excellent! On-rail shooters need more consideration!
Sadly, all shooters, except FPS, need more consideration lately.

The memo was dated 28th November 2003.

A partial breakdown by region for the Panzer Dragoon Orta figures is a charted 123,853 units in the US and 43,850 in Japan, 622,233 for Virtua Fighter 4 in the US and about 600k in Japan, and 207,697 for Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution in the US.

Panzer Dragoon Orta is a favorite because the game is full-on shooting action, arming the player with a full array of offensive and defensive tactics and engaging them to outmaneuver an army of enemies on impulse, and taking the player through a journey of alien landscapes, bio-engineered ecosystems, and detailed cultures which can only be described as visual poetry.
