DirectX Installation Base from Xbit.
Talking about high-performance DirectX 9.0 solutions, those that don’t have DirectX 9 support just for show, but do provide an acceptable level of performance, ATI shipped about 85% of them from August 2002 to September 2003, while NVIDIA – about 15%. As the calculations were based on open as well as closed info (no one kept track of DirectX 9 graphics cards in the market until the second quarter of 2003), some fluctuations are possible, but anyway the trend is clear – ATI has gained superiority in shipments of high-performance DirectX 9.0 GPUs.

I wonder if ISV's can afford to ignore numbers like that.

according to those results it's referring to the enthusiast cards only (9800+ and 5900+) which is not very surprising. ATI have gained a huge reputation for their R300 series but as always NVidia seem to push their low-mids better than ATI. and by a fair margin as well.

They include the 5200/9200 in with the 56/700 and 9600 but I'd like to see the exact spread of the mid-range rather than low-end thrwn i as well.

I would have thought the 9600 series would be doing better considering the performance difference until the recently released 5700 Ultra.

I understood it to mean =>9600 pro for ATI and =>than 5600u for nV.

As for inexpensive DirectX 9.0 accelerators, where DirectX 9.0 support is mostly for marketing reasons, rather than a real option (I mean graphics cards of GeForce FX 5200 and RADEON 9600 SE classes as well as inexpensive cards on the GeForce FX 5600 and RADEON 9600), NVIDIA is on top having shipped 72% of such devices, while ATI – only 28%.
