DirectX 12: The future of it within the console gaming space (specifically the XB1)

There's clearly some dodgy accounting going on there. We know that the XBO GPU doesn't natively support either Conservative Rasterization or ROVs in hardware which are requirements for FL12_1. If Microsoft are trying to claim that it does then it's only via some convoluted semi-emulated method which certainly all GCN1.1 GPU's would also support.
Whatever... Nitrous Games developers are creating a strategy game with outstanding, breathtaking visuals, which will render thousands of physical effects and independent light sources and they say that DirectX 12 is going to bring "tangible benefits" for the Xbox One.

To be honest, though, I am more interested in the benefits DirectX 12 can bring to AIs -I am a big fan of AIs, story mode and prefer it to play against humans for story mode, and admire great AIs.- This excellent article talks about AI and DirectX 12:

The underpinnings of RPG AI emerged relatively quickly. Games like Ultima IV (1985) offered comprehensive conversation trees that allowed players to query NPCs (non-player characters) on specific topics. A major part of Ultima IV’s gameplay involve traveling the world and learning from its various denizens. The approach feels deep, even today, despite the fact that U4 shipped on two double-sided floppy disks.

We had day/night cycles when these graphics were cutting-edge

AInets, what you say? :) :)

And also says, “We’re not experts on the Xbox One...." before listing advantages of the PC that shouldn't apply to the console - lower CPU overhead and advanced GPU features. As MS have told us, some of these DX12 advantages exist in XB1 API already.

There is some motivation for those involved in creating a DX12 engine they intend to sell to say how an engine that uses DX12 is a really great thing to have (or license).

I would like to see a video or demo that has something more representative of the gameplay experience. A lot of shiny hover units (no ground interaction) lining up politely (no real interaction) and spamming fire with no consequence (no destruction, no damage effects, no terrain deformation) on rather featureless terrain seemed to be showing off draw calls without making it clear how interesting or sustainable it would be if things got more complicated.

Gotta hope for Blizzard to move to DX12. ;) Wonder if they'd consider retrofitting StarCraft II.

Get some of that compute bokeh/AO etc for cinematics, AA options for their deferred renderer, + many draw calls for the units etc.

Well, I am stuck with DirectX 11..my laptop can't run DirectX 12 despite having Windows 10, and I recently got StarCraft 2 and all the expansions for 60€, thanks to a black Friday sale, and I play at minimum settings and mostly without shadows, the game runs relatively fine and that's what matters, it's fun.

Well, it'd be an alternative at least. Intel's got DX12 capable GPUs now since Iris/Iris Pro series. Blizzard did do a DX11 renderer for WoW even.

And Diablo! Would save me from having to upgrade my processorLOL.

If MS was really driven to compete or make up the gap horsepower wise the only way they could do it were to clock higher. They'd have to make nearly 400mhz more to be equal however. Good luck.

I suppose though if you were MS, would you had the foresight to over clock retail units at launch or before launch and have them stress tested for 5 years after launch to see if any units died? If the tests were successful would they have the balls to do it :) ? Hahah.

I feel like they could do something like this instead of shrinking the console size when they get a die shrink and make the architecture more power efficient. They keep the same level of power consumption/cooling just clock it higher.

I actually been thinking the same thing, Just boost the GPU to 1GHz & continue to make games as they always have but have a option for people with the 1GHz consoles to use higher settings.

I think some people here must be forgetting the comments from devs last generation about the PS3. Valve suggested that it was "a total disaster":

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted," said Newell. "I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a 'do over.' Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it"

By comparison, the comments about Xbox One being slower than the PS4 is a known quantity now and very tame.

And besides, if you're asked which machine is more powerful do you not give the correct answer? Or is it now considered "unprofessional" to be honest about something? It's not like we're dealing with an unknown of an unreleased platform or anything. He reiterated exactly what everyone already can see.

Valve got burned for it. And in times are changing. What was done in the past isn't done today. Standards are evolving and moving all the time. Especially in the social media space. There was never a role for social media manager, now there is.

He was never asked. He just posted. There's no trailing history to his post as reply or anything. My head would be on a chopping plate with our social media guys wrote things that burned our sponsors.

MS certainly sponsored BF4, Hardline, and SWBF.

Hi everyone. About this slide:

I remember that conference because I followed through a liveblog. I would point out that, although Jaime Rodriguez is employed by Microsoft, in this talk he spoke only from his personal opinion. So that slice does not confirm anything.
Here is the liveblog that was made to follow the conversation.

It's interesting to note how he mentions they are very excited to bring Xbox One gaming to the PC via streaming. I find it interesting because I guess that the future Xbox is going to be a tablet like console where you will be able to stream games to your TV or connect the tablet directly to the TV, while using t gamepads to play wit a friend, for instance.

Talking of DirectX 12, Dolphin emulator now fully supports DX12!! :) In some cases the performance increase is around 160%! ;)

I am thinking about leaving console gaming -except if the next Xbox is portable, and merges things (in the process now, all devices are running the same OS)-, but I need the money now for other stuff, and I am very interested in a decent, well priced tablet that runs DirectX12. :smile2: Which means purchasing a tablet with the Intel processor called Cherry Trail, fully DirectX 12 compatible.

http://liliputing.com/2015/08/teclast-x98-pro-9-7-inch-windows-10-tablet-with-cherry-trail.html

I have that one above, or a similar tablet, in mind. A Cherry Trail processor runs Dolphin emulator, for instance, pretty well.
