DeadmeatGA, please summarise this article

Lol, check out the word 'matrix' to the right
Sony Europe's Quote about PS2 may come true some day

(btw I am quite impressed by the word "1 petaflop"... )
Quite a powerful beast eh? :)

Looking at that powerpoint slide, I'm wondering how people are saying that PS3 is going achieve 1 Tflop performance. 1Tflop takes up half a board according to this slide, which seems like alot of space. It seems like 1 "chip" is the most likely solution for a console device, at 32 Gflops. Am I missing something here? Someone please explain.

ps2 .25micron... ps3 65nm... 5x perf increase?!?

This is what some want to lead you to believe; too bad it doesn't make sense.

No need to even make a chip on 0.65 micon if the PS3 CPU is going to be 32GFLOPS. Not worth it. Not worth botching the launch on such a damn touchy process when it would be better suited for 0.90.

This diagram is that of IBM blue gene not Cell.

Are you sure about that? Looking at the other pictures in the presentation, it definately seems to be a Sony presentation on Sony hardware. Why would they include a slide on IBM hardware in the same presentation?

Like I said, it's IBM's blue gene.

Cell and Blue gene are two totally different projects, someone messed up. They don't even say Cell microprocessor, but Cell Computer.

...

Cell and Blue gene are two totally different projects
They are not. CELL is a customized version of Blue Gene/L. There is a good reason why Kutaragi put Blue Gene in his presentation, it's the father of CELL.

Cell may have taken the idea from Blue gene, however they are two different projects getting their own different funding and R&D.

Kinda like how Sega's System 16 arcade board from 1985~86 used in Shinobi and Altered Beast is the father of the MegaDrive/Genesis :)

So are you saying that CELL will come out 1 to 1.5 years and be approximately 5 to 30 times more powerful per chip? Because unless that's what's happening I find it hard to believe that PS3 will be performing in the 320 Gflop to 1 Tflop range.

It's been in development since 2001. It's being produced on 0.65 micron; billions have been thrown at it. It's something big whatever it turns out to be.

Actually I dont think PS3/Cell started development in 2001. more like 1999 or 2000. as soon as, or shortly after, PS2 hardware was completed.

Cell was annouced in early 2001, but I dont think development started right then. development probably started well before the annoucement. by a matter of months if not years.

aha.

I assume that you're trying to say that it's slated for production on the 65nm node.

Which means exactly nothing in and of itself.

I agree with the "big", though the words trailing the "big" will be much more interesting. ;)

I think we can expect KK to deliver something BIG considering that they have DARED to publically annouced to invest billions in Cell fabs....
