Dave Winer's Blog: "Macs are even more expensive than I thought"

So Shaidar points out that - without and OS load - a PC shop charges $144. Assume the OS load costs about the same as the hard disk install (it's more of a PITA) so that's about $200.

Wow. Apple is really screwing him!!!

Seriously, if you take a laptop of any variety in for store bought service it's going to cost a lot. Apple is completely in line with market prices.

A couple exceptions.

1) I sell new drives with 3/5 year warranties (Hitachi and Seagate)
2) You get your old drive back

Apple kept this guy's old drive, and sold him a refurb (with 90 day warranty, probably).

Uh...here's what I do that works fine...kid wants music, pays me, I type in the pwd...just like I do if they want to surf controversial stuff. When they're old enough they'll get a debit card with overdraft (backed by my signature of course) and learn to manage their savings appropriately and on their dime. iTunes or otherwise.

Actually, they'd be fine with the pwd I suppose since I have them pay themselves for chores from my wallet with no issues.

That is just a pain though. Apple is supposed to be all user friendly and other such things. They are not. Amazon is user friendly IMO.

gtkpod might communicate with ipod, but if you had coupons on your pepsi, or whoever is giving them away then the child cannot redeem them. Coupons should be redeemable without getting a parents CC. That is my stance.

Unsubstantiated and shame on him if they did (and them too), but nobody verified it was a refurb...fish grow longer as tales are spun.

I agree (above) - gift cards, etc. shouldn't require a credit card. My amazon account (however) required one.

It's common practice for OEMs to do this, and since the Apple Store and it's "Genius Bar" (ha!) are simply an extension of an OEM, you can bet your last apple (der!) it's a refurb drive ;) They don't have you sign an agreement which states "you may receive a refurbished part" in the fine print and then give you a new drive.

So you're saying they behaved like Dell, HP, BestBuy, etc.? Exactly.

Yep. You're still not seeing the difference though. When the aforementioned companies do what Apple did here, it is for warranty service, and is provided freely. This was not warranty service, and this customer was charged a premium price for it.

It's fine to receive a refurbished drive and be required to return your old drive when the system is under warranty, but when you are paying for it? That's just plain devious, and greedy on Apple's part.

Mize, it isn't that apple is worse than many other companies (though they may or may not be). It is that their mantra is user friendly, we are not like them. Thus when it turns out that they are like them then people get upset. If apple said we make products that are pretty colors and have a nice UI and left it at that folks would just go meh when it turned out they were doing naughty things.

The reason I was saying I liked amazon is you can download an mp3 without a 50MB program installed. It is too bad if they require a CC as well though to redeem gift cards. That seems strange since you do not need a CC on file to make an order at amazon, or to have an account.
