Dark Souls

yes Patsu, the
key that you didn't mention when you said there was a back door to the NPCs in the Darkroot Garden and we should be going that way. :p It wasn't possible for us to enter the Darkroot Garden from that direction as you suggested without having 20,000 souls to spend
.

Hah, Sigfried talked about the key a few pages back. ^_^
I got the same tips from him.

Why include Covenants in the game without explaining what they do or what the benefits are to the player? We joined the first one we came across like many, I'm sure, and it turns out that's only good for playing online.

That's not strictly true ! You can get cool items in some covenants. They are useful for offline play as well.

I've been trying to complete all the special stuff my first playthrough, the wife is getting impatient already with all the time I spent and don't know if NG+ will be an option.

You're not the first I know. One of my friends didn't buy Dark Souls because his girlfriend yelled at him when he was playing Demon's Souls. There is no way to pause these games. :devilish:

They're worth having, but they should be explained! Something From Software seems allergic to. I had no idea what a covenant was or did until I looked it up online, because the game tellls you squat. And just starting out they should expect players to accept any 'quests' available because that's what you do in RPGs. The idea of not accepting a quest on the possibility that maybe some other quest giver you meet 40 hours in will need exclusivity in the quest giving is not one to be expected of any experienced game player!

Yes, there are many basic things in Dark Souls that need explanations (e.g., What in the world is Rekindle Bonfire ? What're the differences between Hollow and Undead ?). The 380+ page official guide does not always explain them well too. Need some experimentations. Like you, I resort to the net, which is more fun than flipping through pages to be honest.

For Covenant, I think you'll find that every one is different. They may not have one single purpose. Some are for worshipping, some are for invasion, some are for defending an area/cause, etc.

EDIT: ... which reminds me. 2real4tv, since you visited the dragon covenant, did you
cut off the tail of the stone dragon ? You'll get a special weapon and the dragon won't agro.

I thought figuring out stuff in that game all by myself or interacting with the community to get a grip on some of the more obscure aspects was a big part of the fun actually. When I approached the Kitty Cat Covenant there were always red signs on the floor which pretty much summed up what it was mostly about.

Argh, I missed that covenant. Kitty cat doesn't like rejection. Shifty and 2real4tv, do NOT talk to the cat if you're not ready to sign up with her covenant.
You can buy good weapons from her merchant after you sign up.

Thought this was funny(possible spoiler):

Hm... it looks like the Channeler's dance. Is it part of the Channeler's Pitchfork move set ? :)

Since PS+ updated my Dark Souls automatically, I have started to play with the new patch. It stays mostly the same but I can upgrade my armor relatively easily now. Upgraded my entire Black Iron set to +5. It was very difficult to get Twinkling Titanite before.

Tomb of the Giants
, here I come !

Since I can't buy Uchigatana, I use Fire/Lightning Bastard Sword and Claymore as my main weapons. The Claymore heavy attack (longer range pierce) works really well.

Played this last night - completely different game! We farmed the garden, equipped stone armour and DK halberd, and could kill most grunts in a single hit. I got 'eaten' by a tree and it did all of a quarter bar damage. Went toe-to-toe with the minotaur and killed him first try. We're not stressing so much about losing souls now because we've levelled a lot and now the cost of levelling is so high as a few thousand souls doesn't matter much. The graphics have taken a turn for the worse though. We're in the depths or something, some pestilent descent, and the framerate turns choppy and the screen flickers. That's not how I like my games.

Have you been to Blighttown yet because your in for a surprise its the worse I've seen so far in the game. The game has some performance issues but the world is so interesting and rewarding that I want to continue and see everything. I would like to see a PC version however. I am about 86hrs in still got about eight bosses to fight its taking me alot longer than others.

Blighttown has lower framerate, but it's not the worst. I went through it without much problem. There is another fearsome monster in Darkroot Garden that will chew you _and_ the framerate up (Went down to 1 digit I think).

It made me change my strategy from a pure melee dude, to a half-magic-half-melee guy.

Also, stone armor is great if you can wear it (I can't ! Not enough strength and stamina to prevent weighted down). Have a friend who completed the game with it. It has a glaring weakness though. Make sure you have a backup armor in some levels.

The later levels scale exponentially more difficult. I am level 91 and am biting my nails going deeper underground.

I heard some complains about flicker in Blighttown. Fortunately, it didn't happen to me (or I didn't notice it ? ^_^). The town is irritating for other reasons
(poison everywhere, narrow paths + fat bast*rds)
, albeit rewarding for pyromancers.

After the patch, I don't think it's worth farming there anymore since you can buy the same rare minerals from the merchants.

That said, Blighttown is very very important because it leads to a few hidden, treasure-laden areas. Explore harder if you don't read the net or follow the guide. The in-game messages should help.

I was able to farm alot of souls by helping people beat Quelaag 30k souls but sometimes 10k not sure why though.

@Shifty: Don't miss the bonfire below
hug the right wall when you get to the bottom
. Will make Blighttown alot easier.

Ha ha, yeah I  Quelaag. She's hard but interesting.

Blighttown... will also block your progress later
if you fail to find a crucial item there.

Dark Souls Custom Themes Hit Next Week
http://andriasang.com/comzad/dark_souls_themes/

From Software will be releasing a set of Dark Souls custom themes next week. On the 13th, PS3 owners will be able to download four free themes: Way of White, Princess's Guard, Warrior of Sunlight and Dark Wraith.

This batch will be followed on the 21st by Path of the Dragon, Gravelord Servant, Forest Hunter, Darkmoon Blade and Chaos Servant.

Screenshots in the link.

EDIT:
Beat
Tomb of the Giants
last night.
Demon's Ruins
next.

Got this game a couple of weeks ago, Now a level 51 pyromancer... Totally addicted. Would really love a pc version though, the framerate dips are annoying.

Okay, this definitely needs to be spoiler tagged though. It's about the end game. I just killed
Four Kings and met a new NPC

I think I figured it out. xbd, see if this makes sense.

1. There is no good ending. The player is the "Chosen Undead" because he's the Dark Lord. He is (or has) the Dark Soul.

2. If you link the fire at the end of the game, you basically sacrifice yourself to fulfill Lord Gwyn's original plan before he went cuckoo (Prevent darkness from settling in). You, the Dark Lord, die and the world plunges into flames. If you walk away, the world will continue to plunge into darkness because it's supposed to be the era of Darkness anyway.

3. If you don't link the fire, you evetually become the Dark Lord. All the Darkstalkers will honor you as the king of the new Dark world.

I'm trying to make a Cursed Sword of Artorias. According to some people on the net I have to use my original broken sword. I have 3 broken swords now. One of them has been upgraded to +10 but it can only be made into a Regular/True Sword of Artorias. Will see if one of the remaining 2 (my original sword) can be made into the Cursed sword.

If this is the case, then it further reinforces the notion that the player is the bad guy. He is cursed.

Ending my game soon (2 more bosses to go).
Going to tackle Bed of Chaos soon.

I finally made the Great Sword of Artoria, and leveled up enough to wield it. It's a great disappointment compared to my Lighting Claymore + 4, and Fire Bastard Sword + 8. The sword can scale with 4 stats (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence and Faith), but I'll need to level up like perhaps 40 levels or more before it can match my element swords. 8^(

Also I remembered last night that I threw my original broken sword hilt away ages ago, so I can't test my theory above anymore. XD

I got three bosses to go
Gywn, Nito and Four Kings
. Its almost like I don't want it to end :( so I've been procastanating. Really pissed that I missed out on the maggott helmet(I think that what its called) killed
Solaire and did not realize it was a drop from the bugs.
Currently working on Tomb of the Giants.
