Too many people here trying to compare this to the GTA. Why do people still think that it's easy to make another GTA game here? Many people have done it and many people have failed.
It's not easy guys. GTA is more than just an open envirnoment. It has funny satire, great gameplay, cool artwork, great presentation, great music, great voice acting, some of the best storylines in videogame history, and best of all it’s fun all at the sametime.
Don't give this game "the next GTA" so fast. It needs to earn that, not be giving to it just because it's an open world.
DoA and Bloody Roar are Tekken like games. Gameday and NFL2k are Madden like games. Forza and Enthusia are GT like games. Unreal, Quake, Half-Life, Call of Duty are shooters. Midnight Club, PGR are like Ridge Racer. SF Rush, Burnout, Cruis'n USA are like Outrun. Sonic Team Racing, Diddy Kong Racing, Crash Racing are Mario Kart like games.
And so Saint's Row, True Crime are GTA like games.
Some games can be classified by genre (FPS, racing, RPG, etc) others, where they are either 1.) a sub genre like a specific class of racing game (action combat racing, cartoon racing, super arcade racing, arcade-sim, forgiving sim, harcore sim) or 2.) a game starts a new genre of gaming and everything that follows it is a knock off.
I think GTA falls into #2. It started, or at least made popular, a genre of games. In that sense Saint's Row and True Crime are "GTA-knock offs" or "GTA like games".
Many publications only have so many categories (Action, Platform, Adverture, Sports, FPS, RPG, etc). GTA style games are "perpetual, large, streaming worlds with an emphasis on interactivity and player freedom to push the game forward".
How do you fit that into one word
As for the "Next" GTA, well, the guy making the game was the creator of the GTA1 and GTA2 games for the PC which were, to my understanding, a cult hit. He seems to be the creative type. Personally I would prefer it not to be the next GTA. There are many elements of GTA that keep me away. The fact Crackdown is a cop bringing down organized crime is a positive in my book
