Could there be any PS3 games with no AA?

i really dont understand how those console could be labeled as o sooo powerfull,
and then things that dont seem to be a problem on 6month old high end rigs are already talked about as uncertain............

even for the ps3 that is still months away.

sucks, but most wont care anyway.

i for one prefer 1600*1200 at a high framerate over any AAAAA mode and lower resolution/framerate.

Well if the PS3 is delayed, guess there's little chance they would increase the bus width to overcome this apparent shortcoming.

Did they ever project when they would go to 65nm? Any chance they would push out 6 months to try to skip 90nm, if 6 months is enough for such a transition?

Oh really... And on what TV would you play a game at 1600x1200? (don't mention PC monitors cause we're talking LARGE audiences here who play on TVs. Even then the people with monitors capable of 1600x1200 are not exactly a lot, compared to the total)

Come on people, let's stay in context here... These consoles obviously have to target some strict regulations, one of which is resolutions that are set in stone. People are already nagging that a small percentage of the audience will be able to play at 720p, which is a "normal" HD resolution, simply because the percentage of people with HDTVs is very small compared to the total TV-owning population.
The most widely used resolution on PS3 will be 720p simply because that's the most widely used resolution on HDTVs. In the circumstances, some AA would be nice. No point in saying "Oh but i'd soooo prefer 3000x2100!!1".

Let's keep the boundaries where they are, and discuss what needs to be discussed within those boundaries.

and you'll get games that perform as such at that resolution, if the games were even more demanding your h/w would be taxed and fps/rez would have to go down.

The games for these nextgen systems will be pushing the h/w to the limits, they could run at a higher rez with AA but we'd probably have games looking similar to those available on pcs right now.

And my TV's pretty sharp, I get more jaggies in the PGR3 menu than I do sitting in the interior of the car. Maybe BlimBlim took that shot from the framebuffer before AA was applied, not sure...

That's because you're probably comparing the upscaled 720 image on your tv to the actual 600 height screens that everyone else is looking at.

RR6 sure looks like it has AA, maybe 2x, although I guess those could be jpeg artifacts.

Then I'd say that you don't know what you are looking for. Both image samples I provided were at their native resolutions giving the best possible opportunity to compare IQ. You can clearly see that the PGR3 shot has 2xAA smoothing on the near vertical line whereas in the RR6 shot, at the same angle, no anti aliasing is present.

For reference:

No AA

2xAA

Compare the near vertical/horizontal lines in these two reference shots with that of the ones in the PGR3/RR6 image.

AA being costly from a bandwidth point of view, I expect a lot of PS3 games to use no AA at all.

And when absent it will be minimized by DOF and motion blur effects. We all want floating point blending, AA, and advanced shader effects, but these things together even bring the current high end GPUs with dedicated memory to their knees.

I am pretty sure Sony is not too worried though. I don't know how many of my friends with PS2s don't even notice the aliasing in most games. HD resolutions and all the extra shader effects will be a huge step forward for PlayStation consumers. I think most of us (even us aliasing sensative people like myself) would prefer much more detailed games with a little aliasing than for devs to dedicate significant amounts of bandwidth to get ride of minor aliasing. At leas that is my thoughts on that.

Edit: Then again it appears that there has been some movement on both the HDR and AA front from developers so we may see some really snazzy solutions from developers :) The E3 slide/demo one 128bit HDR sure looks odd now with developers finding faster ways around the hardware.

Or the 2 other screenshots I posted from IGN and Gamespot that show the exact same thing I'm describing.

It's just that particular car, it has a very rounded dash that accentuates the jaggies on the bottom of the windshield.

ok.. since i dont have any actual experience myself.
(i only saw the first person shooter on the xbox360, and there the edges were horrible)

how good is the AA in the titles like cameo? i mean... maybe compared to the first person shooter (2nd world war), or to a pc game with 1600*1200 without AA.

Thanks for the answers.....:p

thanks.. good to know.
and good for mircrosoft.

(but that second world war fps really looked horrible regarding edges, anyone who agrees/disagrees with me?)

I'd really like to have some graphics options in games. I want to be able to turn on/off AA, what type of filtering to use etc.

Or maybe someone forgot to say "the left half of this image is from RR6, and the right half is from PGR3." I didn't even notice that the image was from two different games, since it's awfully hard to tell from thumbnails.

I think what you want is a PC, that kind of defeats the purpose of having a closed platform

Oh sorry about that. I did choose samples which had characteristic elements of their HUD's...

In retrospect I suppose it could seem confusing.

For some odd reason the few times I've seen PGR3 in a store (ie at EBgames), the thing has always seemed really shimmer and jaggy :???: Is it because htey configured it wrong (this is the usual Sammy - Xbox setup)?

I've only been able to see a jaggie video.

Kameo? Kameo is flawless, there's no jaggies.

I'd say it's good, but not flawless, on my 61" I can see Jaggies if I look for them and sometimes I see them even if I don't look for them. Condemned however is pretty close to flawless.

FWIW I have seen PGR in various shops and it NEVER looked the same. Seems to be a setup problem. On some screens it was a jaggie mess. On some other screens it looked fabulous though. Could be they are running the game in 480p on the HDTVs?
