Could PS3 and X360 manage the Crytec 2 engine ?

Carmack specifically states that both console CPU's are way slower than the specs suggest and even with high optimisation, they only compare to regular PC CPU power:

http://forum.teamxbox.com/showpost.php?p=6694749&postcount=1

He's right

"when you do a straighforward development process on them, they’re significantly slower than a modern high end PC. It’s only by doing significant architectural work that you even have a chance of finding speed-ups to what the PC can do, let alone it’s theoretical performance. "

even with worse theoretical performance (xbox1 example), with optimization console can sped up to what pc can do

this is a thing that we all knew well, I think
theoretical numbers are pure PR bullshits.

we have to use games to compare one platform to another
(es. ps2 have more flops than x1, but x1 have better looking games)

I was refering to outdoor scenes, with "battle between woman and enemy at 5 fps"...

There does seem to be a very large discrepency even in 'outdoor' scenes:

And carmack is a master at multicore CPU's

He is gonna struggle because in CPU programming experience he is far behind compared to a PS2 dev :)

"Far behind" is probably pushing it.

Cheers

That's not at all what he is saying. He said with a STRAIGHTFORWARD development (i.e. from a PC developers standpoint) they are slower than PC.

He says you need signifigant architectural changes to make them realize their true potential (hello captain obvious)

Nowhere in that statement does he say the potential power for CELL or XeCPU is less than a regular PC CPU.

He also says there true potential is nothing like what the specs suggest and thats the basis for everyone assuming that these things are faster than PC CPU's.

The way he phrases his statement, "to even have a chance of getting speedups over the PC" doesn't exactly convey the idea that he's expecting these things to run rings around x86 does it? And he's probably comparing to standard single core PC CPU's there aswell.

It's not cg, it's all realtime....For the huge, outdoor army part (which was sped up in post-rendering)...the Deans already said they exagerated the post rendering effects (motion blur and depth of field blur, etc.), as well as using non-gameplay camera angles, to add a cinematic feel to the trailer.

Why don't you people do a "search" if you want to know the details?

Christ scooby, they're the exact same scene, one is a panned-out shot of the entire landscape, one is a close-up of character combat.

He wanted to emphasise the difficulty these CPUs were presenting for him. His views are valid, but it is only one perspective. If he doesn't show us what these CPUs can really do, others will.

What on earth does HS have to do with this thread? Deano made a bunch of comments on that E3 footage already. Do a post history search for "DeanoC". From last May or so (where all pics are dated from...not June and not October), he's said the same exact thing. No need to repeat it AGAIN, b/c this horse has been beaten to death, revived, and then rebeaten. Get over it already. He's mentioned what was CG and what wasn't. There are 1080p shots of all the HS screens over at www.ninjatheory.com as well. Do some of the research yourself. HS has nothing to do with Crytec, and the "discrepancies" you point out are all from the same exact sequence, so I think you might be confused on that point as well. Oy, the NT devs have almost shot themselves in the foot by being so open on this forum. :( PEACE.

Well the peak specs suggest a 10-20x increase(at least) in available flop power over a conventional CPU. Obviously that will never be realized.

However the true performance can be far below the peak specs, and still be much more powerful than your average desktop CPU.

No need to get upset, I was just following up on the previous comment. To me the 2nd shot looks drop dead amazing, while the 1st shot is just 'ok', i don't see how you can say there's no discrepency.

I never said they were CG, I'm just pointing out the cinematic-shots seem to be much more impressive than the in-game fighting shots.

then this is the outdoor gameplay scene (dated 25 october):

this is not impressive for me

this is CG in my opionion (it's very different in quality), this is not gameplay (dated 28 jun)

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/614/614802/heavenly-sword-20060117011353953.jpg

I explain my point now?

I take casual pic, not the worse

There is NO CG and Heavenly Sword is more impressive than Crysis IMO.

Well when you've figured out how to fit a few thousand soldiers and some big-arse contraptions in a few square metres, patent it, and sell it to NT ;)

Anyway, this is SOOOOOO OT.

pff... I tried!! But they won't return my emails....oh well, their loss!

Topics:

Crytek - CryEngine 2 - Crysis, pick one.

And, no, you can't choose Heavenly Sword.
