Cost of Cell

MS should have included two GPU's to make up the cost of Cell.

Sony can put all the fancy stuff they want in their system. MS should have shown them what that stuff REALLY costs. It costs power in other parts of the system that's more useful.

But they didn't.

MS whole gamble seems to be centered on getting the system out early, and not performance, and your suggestion by the way, would make the whole system GPU heavy, and make many games CPU limited. Far better for MS to have included four cores and 2 MB of cache (4 SEPERATE 512 KB caches, and not a single cache) on Xenos, inorder to help combat CELL superior's performance.

I have no doubt that if MS made the system more powerful, Sony would have reacted, and just made the PS3 more powerful. Where would it end?

Can someone explain to me why they think SONY/Toshiba will be better at fabbing CELLs ie higher yields than IBM??? Is CELL using SOI?

Cause at this time IBM doesn't care to mass produce CELL. Sony has to produce milions of processors, not some thousands..

Uh..isn't SONY/Toshiba sourcing CELLs from IBM too? Didn't they buy fab space at Fiskhill?

Dunno! I thought they were producing CELL CPUs only in their fabs, but I could be wrong

Sony is using IBM East Fish Kill till Nagasaki2 comes online, sometime late 2006 early 2007. They'll also use Toshiba's OTSS from the onset I believe.

PSP chip production has been outsourced to Flexconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industries Taiwan) so Nagaski can dedicate itself to PS3.

I don't think it's the actual chips themselves. The assembly ie PCB is being done there not the actual chip fabbing. If you have a link it would be appreciated.

Yeah you are correct, it is the assembly.

Link, for Hon Hai it's quite old news - got the latest earnings from them citing PSP and iPod as the key drivers for their business

As for the IBM/Sony/Toshiba Cell fabbing trifecta it was on a PC WatchImpress site with slides from some Sony event, I think one or xbdestroya might have the link with confirmation.
