You shouldn't be staggered by this point. Those numbers are going to grow and grow. I'll be staggered if Florida doesn't end up hitting 50k a day. I wouldn't even be surprised if they hit 100k a day two weeks from now.

 

Testing is at 23.2K. This is their highest level of testing ever. They should be aiming for over 50K testing a day to get a better handle on the pandemic.

Unfortunately, New cases are still at highest levels with +817, since April 20th when they had the prison facility outbreak. Today's figures would put the state it at 3.5% positivity rate for tests. Cuyahoga County had +142 new cases today.

So this is still their worst moments ever. If the new cases don't drop, I fear the numbers will drastically increase leading up to the upcoming Fourth of July Holiday week and be the start of a new surge.

Well maybe it's not the numbers that are staggering, where it's more that I'm still in amazement that the idiots in charge can't realize they need to do something drastic, and do it weeks ago.

As for the general outcome, yes, unfortunately I can see those 50K to 100K numbers as well.

 

I agree, the responses, and the lack of response, are staggering. There's such an incredible lack of intelligence/transparency. I can't decide if the leaders are that dumb (true in Trump's case) they genuinely don't understand how to control the disease, or if they've just given up and are papering over the whole thing, happy to accept the death toll. Either way, I can't see them getting re-elected, but US politics may not work that way. It seems based on console fanboyism - There Can Be Only Two.

 

So it's even worse than that... It's only banned if their revenue is over 50% from alcohol.

Federal officials failed to immediately stop the distribution of many COVID-19 antibody tests they knew were flawed, leading to inaccurate data about the spread of the virus. Congress is now investigating why the FDA did not review the tests it allowed to be distributed widely throughout the U.S. Sharyn Alfonsi's three-month investigation into the faulty tests will be broadcast on 60 Minutes, Sunday, June 28 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

It took 50 days for the FDA to reverse its course on antibody tests. In May, it began requiring test developers to apply for emergency authorization and submit data to show their tests worked. It was too late, says Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi. He is investigating the FDA for not regulating the antibody tests. "Fraudulent tests flooded the market. Hundreds and hundreds of tests taken by hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people," says the Illinois Democrat. All companies had to do to get their tests to the U.S. market was state they were self-validated. "When you open the floodgates to virtually any product being sold by anybody, well, guess what? Shysters, scam artists, and people who are preying on unsuspecting consumers enter the fray," says Krishnamoorthi.​

It took almost three months before the FDA started pulling tests off the market, but by then, many American municipalities had already used the tests to determine whether they could send essential workers like EMTs, policemen and firemen back to work. One of the more than 40 tests removed by the FDA was the one Dr. Gonzalez prevented from being used in Laredo. Suppose he hadn't tested them? "We wouldn't have a true indicator of the level of infection. The public deserves for us to give them something that's valid," he tells Alfonsi.​

I am fairly pissed about the pain, unemployment and so on endured to slow this down only to have officials at the highest levels actively undermine the collective sacrifice of so many. There is room for a debate on what point the trade of should be and what the socially agreed upon value of life is for making decision , but we just ignore nuance and actively make poor decisions.

High school students near Austin await test results after Pongfest

AUSTIN — About 300 teenagers were exposed to the coronavirus at a massive party in a posh lakeside suburb in the Central Texas hills, Austin Public Health authorities said.

High school students partied at the June 20 Pongfest in Lakeway, said Sandy Cox, mayor of the community about 20 miles west of Austin.

Some of the partygoers were awaiting test results for COVID-19, the illness the new coronavirus causes, when they attended the party and have since tested positive for the virus, Austin Public Health said Friday in a statement.

“The virus often hides in the healthy and is given to those who are at grave risk of being hospitalized and dying,” the health officials said. “While younger people are at less risk for complications, they are not immune to severe illness and death from COVID-19.”

Cox said in a Facebook Live announcement that anyone who attended the party should self-isolate and disclose their participation if contacted by contact tracers. The incident is being investigated by Austin contact tracers.

“Unfortunately, our caseload is very probably going to increase,” Cox said.

Actually, in some strange way, really bad numbers from the next week might end up being beneficial in the longer term. Anything which scares some common sense into enough people and makes them behave responsibly next weekend might actually prove to be a positive.

Here in the UK, the pubs are to reopen for the first time and I don't expect anything but a surge in new cases by the middle of July.

 

As of now, Florida is reporting +8,530 new cases since yesterday putting their 26 day streak at 83,628 total. This streak alone exceeds 42 other states total case counts.

Arizona reported +3,857 new cases (73,908 total). They're around 3.3K behind Georgia (77,210 total) who reported +2,225 new cases today. If the trends continue, in around 3 days Arizona will pass by Georgia and move into slot #9.

I think the cases has increased in other locations, like Cuyahoga County (the Greater Cleveland Area) had +142 cases for the Saturday and Sunday, which is above their typical range. Here is the chart for the Cleveland area, backfilled to initial onset dates. However, it's not as spikey as the Hamilton region.

INCREASE IN POSITIVE CASES - HAMILTON COUNTY REGION

The effective reproductive ratio, also known as R naught, measures how many people will be infected by a sick individual. The R naught had reached 2.4 in that region in April. In recent weeks, the R naught had declined to below one. However, in the last 10 days, the R naught has doubled over the last 10 days in the Cincinnati region.

Dr. Lofgren explained that the increase in cases is not only due to the tests being performed, but the increase shows there is a greater presence of the COVID-19 in the area, and it is spreading in the community. He said it serves as a reminder about the importance of wearing a mask in public, washing your hands, sanitizing frequently touched surfaces, and keeping social distance.​
