Cool demo

I sort of fail to be able to imagine any practical uses for this tile based user interface thingy.

It sure beats Fisher-Price and other interactive toys.

I bet you could rig up a pretty nice security system with some bigger versions of those thingys. Pick out who you want to keep an eye on for a while and drag the video stream to a storage tile. Anything that has alot of video streams that need to be kept track of would probably benefit from that stuff

Or you could just use MS Windows and click on a persons profile from a list to bring up a window. ;)

The problem with these plates is that they don't actually do anything, other then take up space. What could be useful is a device like a flash drive, and when you place it on the surface opens up a window representing whatever data/program is on the drive. Or if the tile was a screen in itself.

Eh? Many (it not all) of the tiles are interactive; you can see the guy using a stylus on many of them, dragging, scrolling through video frames, selecting things. Heck, he even places his phone down on one of them which validates his ID. This last one means it should be fairly trivial to do precisely what you said, place an object down on one of them and wirelessly transmit data from it.
