Controversial this: ATI & retail

Nobody is saying for instance how "great" the old X800Pro compared to the 6800GT.

Seriously, why would they? x800 pro is dead, now, and has been replaced by boards such as x800 xl (which is faster and cheaper).

Then take the new X850pro: the XL totally kills it, the Pro being generally more expensive and slightly slower. The XL serves to illustrate how badly the other ati cards are doing compared to it.
Yet choosing between the 6800GT and the XL still isn't as clear cut, now that GTs are being offered for almost the same price.

Eh? You wanted to talk about the old pro just before, now you want to talk about the new one?
Again, so what if the xl is faster than the x850 pro, people will just buy the xl. the pro is only there to get rid of a few chips that didn't make the grade for x850 xt - if they sell, they sell, if they don't prices will drop.

For pci express? pricewach are showing the x800 xl at $288 whilst the pci express 6800 gt is $375 - that doesn't look like its almost the same price to me.

Look at this on pricewatch as well:
$238 - GeForce 6600 GT OC 128MB
$232 - RADEON X800 PCI Express 256mb

Probably similar speeds but with twice the ram on the X800 - thats not competetive?

6600GTs used to sell for 190 euros. Now you can find them 140 euros.
Compare to 250 euros for a X800.

6800GTs and XLs are both around 300 euros.

The X700 on the other hand is recommendable, being priced similar to the 6600 but offering definitly better performance. Previously it wasnt very available but that seems to be being corrected now
Can you fill me in on the difference in performance between a vannila X700 as opposed to a 6600?

Where?

And, your argument appears to be based entirely on your location - clearly its not the case everywhere, is it?

I can second that. 6600 GT go for about 1200-1300 nis (4.4 nis for dollar), while X800 go for 1800-1900nis (for 256 mb board).
There is one Gigabyte 128mb X800 board here for around 1400, but it is the only one. While a leadtek 6600 GT will go for 1200 nis at my shop.

The 128MB X700pro costs less than the 128MB 6600GT. The 256MB X700pro is about the same price as the GT.

The 256 Mb X700 Pro is a bit more expensive then the 6600 GT, at least in Sweden. Komplett.se, PCI Express:

X700 Pro 256 Mb: 1895 SEK
X700 128 Mb: 1490 SEK
6600 GT 128 Mb: 1695 SEK

I did a search on pricewatch and the cheapest 128 Mb 6600 GT goes for 149 $.

I was looking at the gt oc because its prolly about the same speed as the x800. sure if you want a slower board with half the ram pay 50 bucks less.

50$ is a lot of money since we're talking about cards that cost 150$. And you can of course pay 50$ more (compared to the X800) and get a much faster X800 XL.

I think you mean MB, not Mb. Megabytes not megabits.
