Console Overclocking

I found this funny, instead of posting it on OT I decided to post it in its right place.

I'm not sure if this is a repost because I'm too afraid to read anything in the console forum.

I will not be reading the responses because I'm horribly afraid to do so.

Here you go, enjoy and goodbye.

some people overclocked even a playstation back in the time.
lost the link though

I really don't unserstand why ppl hate the console boards so much. I get tons of useful info here and don't find anybody to be spamming or posting useless topics.

Saw instructions of how to overclock a N64 years ago. It's not even very difficult, one just replaces a 2-pin oscillator. Problem number one: the page was in Japanese as I remember, and I couldn't quite make out the instructions! :) Problem two: there are actually two oscillators on the board... One that controls the video frequency, one that controls the master RDRAM PLL which divides down the clock for the RCP and CPU chips as well. Biggest problem: which clock does what??? :)

Each oscillator is marked with a cryptic number code which I don't know what it means, and the board itself only says X1 and X2 respectively...

What I'd like to do is raise RCP/RDRAM clock whilst leaving video clock untouched - because then the TV freaks out and can't display the image. Maybe I could get Perfect Dark to run at at least 20fps average if giving the chips a speed kick in the pants. ;)

Yeah right, you argue constantly in by far the worst forum at Beyond3d (general) yet your scared to read the console forum...

Yea tell me about it, if anything should have been closed it should have been the general forum.

Anyone know if it's possible to OC a Dreamcast? I think it'd be really nice to get rid of some of that stuttering on Shenmue II.

I know people who placed 4 coolers in their Dreamcast console, just to be able to keep it running for weeks on end. Never heard of overclocking though, but you can be sure you'll need much cooling for it. :)

Maybe a combination of a peltier element and a heat pipe would do the trick? :p

are all the dreamcasts built in his life with watercooling or whas that only with the first batch of consoles (revision A? )

It wasn't watercooling, it was heatpipes. And, it was only the first revision I've been told. Too bad, it was a cool setup... ;) (No pun intended, hehe.)

There's no

about it. Have you ever really read many threads in the General forum?

Ermmmm i'm always on there and i'm sorry u think that of that forum. I've never seen u there so i'm not sure how u can have an opinion on it... The fact that a "Console overclocking" thread turned into a "Console VS General Forum" thread is just one of the many reasons why i started posting on the GF instead of the CF... Anyway, to each his own...

I don't have to post lots in the General forum in order to read it. At times the place is quite unbelievably extreme when compared to this forum.

When someone makes such stupid and uneccesary comments as K.I.L.E.R did in his initial post there will always be some disagreeing reponses to that. The same would happen in the General forum.

Anyway the thread is still partially on topic ATM. And I don't want to take it all the way off topic. So I won't bother going into detail on why I dislike the General forum.

Teasy,

What does the general forum and all that other BS have to do with the console forum and this thread in particular? Stay on topic please!

I'd still be interested in details on how to mod my N64 to go a bit faster if anyone can help out... I can desolder the original oscillator and replace it with a socket easy enough, but when I have no idea what speed the thing runs at I'm at a loss as to what to replace it with. Also, which of the two oscillators do I need to replace, X1 or X2? :)

I'm sure there are system schematics or stuff like that given to authorized repair centers and such that could answer these questions, but I don't have access to such material.

I was replying to a comment from the original poster.. that's what my comments have to do with this thread. Also incase you didn't notice I just said I wasn't going to go further into it as to let the matter drop. So your comment isn't needed and really only prolongs things.

IIRC they did use water in the heat pipe.

Yeah, I thought the early ones did use water, and that caused some problems later on or if the system was left on for extended periods of time.
