Console emulation thread.

Well if this generation lasts long enough they maybe able to emulate both PS2 and PS3 on PS4. They'll want to offer PS2 games for download like they do with PS1 games. That is unless they would prefer people making remakes. Which can have the advantage of higher resolution and PSN integration. They also need to consider the possibility of a future PSP emulating PS2.

Because of a couple of emulators for PC have made news articles, namely PCSX2, it almost seems like someone is advertising it, not for sale but to get attention.

Who's that "someone"? Is someone advertising this emulator each time it's mentioned? Remember that I started the thread with a question regarding PS2 emulation ON PS3. I just mentioned PCSX2 as an example because is the most advanced emulator for PS2.

Sony is not going to put out an emulator that can't achieve 95% + compatibility with the PS2. Putting out a "Virtua Fighter 4" emulator wouldn't cut it.. Sony would get more bitching about individual games not working than they'd get benefit from having the emulation available at all, imho.

Being able to emulate some subset of games is not the same thing as being able to emulate all of them.
I know.

That only was (another) an example to draw a "light" analogy on hardware capabilities, not to say that they (both PCSX2 and a hypothetical PS3 emulator) should do or achieve the same results.

I still think sony should release a PS2 emulator box that has the EE/GS and the memory, a USB connection, and HDMI passthrough. Easy to hook up to your PS3 (and PC if Sony writes the drivers for it) and use your existing optical drive and controller for games.

There already exists an emulator compatible with 90% of Xbox and Xbox 360 games with better graphics, it's called a PC :)

Why ?

With the ps4 sony wil simply sell ps2 titles through thier DD store thus making more money. I think we are done with the age of using older games on a new system without paying to do so. Developers see they can make money doing that and the platform holders see it also.

So they can make money off an accessory or sell PS2 games through PSN since emulation seems to be far too costly? Not everything has to be a remake, for example the PSX Final Fantasy games are hot sellers in PSN store. This way you could get a box for PS2 BC and then buy the games off PSN to play them, it doesn't defeat the purpose, just another avenue for revenue.

Sony would have to them sell that box. The box costs sony money , they need retail space for it ,they need to advertise and explain what it is..

No when the ps4 comes out it will be way more powerfull than the ps2 and will emulate it just fine. After all the ps2 will be 11-12 years old when the ps4 is launched.

They already have people buying games on PSN and with the ps4 it will be just as easy. Why go through the trouble of selling evne more hardware

Speaking of console emulation, recent versions of Dolphin feature OpenCL support which provides a good boost in a couple things I've tried on my 4850. I'm talking about a 20-30% increase in emulation speed. I'm not clear on exactly what OpenCL is being used to accelerate, though.

Do you have the latest version of Dolphin? Can you provide me a link in pm so I can test it?

I seem to remember that the someone on here claimed the problem with emulating the PS2 on the PS3 totally in software would be bandwith between the CPU and GPU on the PS3?

I've already linked to the old thread that covered all these points. You should scroll back a few posts and read the old thread to learn what the real issues are.

Unless you are talking about remakes like the "GoW Collection", there still is the issue of needing an accurate enough emulator.
Looking at how its done on the PS3, you can play any PSOne game thats on PSN with your physical disc aswell, the downloads practically are unmodified disc-images. You wont be able to fit the physical CDRom into a PSP though.
