Chronicles of Riddick gets a remake (x360/PS3)

I really enjoyed The Darkness, as well. Aside from being a fan of the source material, I thought the game was really well done (great loading transitions even!) with excellent use of the Darkness powers in the game.

I played the PS3 version from the PS Store last night...it was pretty bad. It's a shame because I was sort of looking forward to this one. And the graphics are so washed out, I thought something was wrong with my TV at first.

Thats because the game engine has not aged well, it seems to be too similar to Doom 3 engine of darkness and disappearing dead enemies as I am not sure what 3d engine they are using, it would have made more sense to either use a new engine and reprogram the older game content into it.

That also how I feel about Doom 3 and Quake IV if they get remakes or director's cuts on current gen consoles considering that once RAGE is finished they will have not excuses not to reprogram those games to give them proper ports.

any other opinions? I've downloaded the demo (360), but haven't played it yet.

Is it really poor? Poor compared to what? I realize these are PS3 opinions, but does anybody have the 360 version to compare with the aging engine in say L4D?

It isn't my type of game, but there are times when its age shows - the phong lighting, specular aliasing come to mind. They add some post-processing effects with the tone mapping, DOF, and motion blur, but it is still very clear that it is an upgrade of an old game with the seemingly low poly corridor shooting. I'm not sure if the 360 demo is representative of the new material though...

Bought the Xbox version and played for a bit.
I was a pretty big fan of the Darkness (the storytelling and VA anyways) and I've heard many, many good things about the Xbox 1 Riddick game, so I bought this game as soon as I could. Such awesome presentation! (and having endured the cringe worthy storytelling in KZ2 and RE5, I'm all the more appreciative of Starbreeze efforts in this department) Game looks pretty good too, love the lighting and shadowing.

I played the demo on my ps3, and I must say, I liked it. Less emphasis on gunplay and more on stealth. Nice change of pace from other FPSs !
The only thing below average was the AI, theyare plain Dumb, atleast in the demo !

As an update for this game I feel I need to post the following preview, review and progression videos from GT (well I don't know of another site)

The whole concept of remaking an already existing 3d game from a gaming platform that saw limited game sales to gaming platform with much higher potential sales is a great idea and I have to commend the developers of CoR for making this game.

I really hope that other game devs get on this bandwagon as well so that we may see/play remakes of games such as Doom 3, D3 RoE, Quake IV (all remade using the Rage engine), as well as a game like Star Wars Republic Commando but remade with Unreal Engine 3 (as opposed to UE 2 or whatever) and any other game where it makes sense to have a remake made for it due to limited sales since the character and level designs are already there and things like gameplay, A.I. and physics can be added or enhanced.

Hell I would kill for a KOTOR 1 and 2 remake over playing that borefest with FPS gameplay MAsseffect (that you Bioware instead of making a waste of time MMO)

PS: I would even include the idea of a remake for KillZone 1 as a Director's Cut Edition (Capcom does it all the time) specially now that the KZ2 3d graphics tools have delivered a new age in in game graphics, of course in my idea the game should be focused on Single player and Coop so as to leave the next upgrade in online MP for Killzone 3.

Man, Starbreeze is one fucking awesome developer.
I'm really loving Dark Athena right now, it feels more like an FPS adventure rather than your bog-standard shooter. The critical consensus on this game is wildly off the mark, it's one of the best fps games of the past six months.
Also, I'm consistently impressed with the graphics; the lighting, shadows, motion blur and DoF filters can make this game look photorealistic at times, I really wish we could see what Starbreeze could do with the hardware if they had the production time and budget of a game like RE5. Fuck Activision/Blizzard for just abandoning this game, (and god bless Atari for picking it up) this is a quality title that deserves good sales.

I just finished both campaigns and Dark Athena actually feels much tighter to me. The new weapons are a lot funner and they let you be more creative with taking out the enemies, there's a lot less fetch quests, and even the voice acting sounds better imo. Both campaigns are great but I hate how nostalgic reviewers are over the first game when Dark Athena makes some very nice improvements to the formula.

Graphics-wise, the game can look rough in some parts but it can look really amazing when you actually experiment with snuffing out the lights and sneaking around It actually feels like your own eyes are adjusting to the light and dark.

Overall, it took me about 25 hours to finish both campaigns so it's definitely worth it if you haven't played Butcher Bay.
