I don't think there is really any way that Carmack can win. Rutan is an aerospace corporation. Carmack has a bunch of mechanics and stuff (just regular guys) working with him.
I mean if he wins it would be highly unlikely, but it is always fun to root for the underdog, instead of the person who for years has been working in aerospace.
Plus rutans attempts are disingeniuos in regards to the X-prize, while their vehicle is better than the shuttle it is still extremely expensive, and basically not a large step in the direction that the X-prize was intended to produce. (i.e. cheap access to space)
