Can all games be played at 1080i on the ps3?

It shouldn't be a matter of developer education. The certification process itself should enforce 1080i support.

There's negligible performance difference between 1280x720 and 960x1080. It should be mandated for certification.
 
I have a television that has 1440x900 resolution (strange) and lucky me it supports both 720p and 1080i.

Qustion thogh, how does 1080i work? I still don't understand how 1920x1080i works in something that is less resolution? :???:

Again it is blamed on devs but SCE should have forced devs as a standard requirement. I am sure lots of people wants to play games on 1080i.
 
There's a 12% increase in pixel count going from 1280x720 to 960x1080 (although the memory increase is negligible). I don't really know how this translates into actual, real-world performance penalties.

I actually asked a developer from Monolith about this recently, about why their upcoming games don't support 1080 upscaling. He said that he looked into this functionality, but decided that the performance decrease was too great. He claimed that the 12% increase in pixel density was big for a shader-intensive game like theb upcoming Condemned 2.

I don't know how much credence to give to this statement. Is he saying that titles like Uncharted, or Unreal Tournament III, aren't shader-intensive?

I doubt they aren't shader intensive. There are different degrees of itnensity though. It's not "either it's intensive or it's not". Those other games' shaders have probably been fined-tuned to work properly at their target resolutions.
 
Well, every game should have been tuned for 960x1080 in the first place, and then there would be no question about having sufficient performance for 1280x720.

You want them to set a higher minimum resolution requirement than the 360? Considering the general state of cross platform titles on the PS3 that doesn't sound like a very good idea or in the best interest of the majority of HD enabled PS3 consumers.

And for the record, my primary gaming display is currently a 1080i CRT.

Obviously, including proper scaling solution from day 1 would have been in the best interest of consumers (and developers, me thinks), but since that's not an option...
