I avoid QT movies if possible as they are crap quality and uses lots of resources to playback vs WMV or MP4. But now that I know VLC can play QT movies then I will eject Quicktime player from my PC for good... hopefully it wont drag the OS with it!
I suggest both of you going MPCHC route instead of VLC, the IQ is far superior, supports DXVA for .mkv's too etc, and has built-in codecs for QT too I believe, and RealMedia if you still encounter those files somewhere
